There are 2 other unrelated characters in the book that leave their country to travel for a cure. Each person is hoping for a miracle. I remember that only one of these characters find the miracle. The Russian is was discovered by his political spies and is exiled by party members as he returns to Russia. The novel was written about 20 years ago, I think.
