Plot:A boy goes to the seaside.He sees a model Viking ship in a shop window.The shopkeeper gives it to him.He takes it to the beach with some friends. The model ship grows and flies into the clouds with the children. When it descends it is in England of the past. The children have adventures and return. Then more adventures at different times in the past. Read to schoolchildren around 1940-1945.

Yes, definitely The ship that flew. It's recently been reprinted by Oxford University Press.
