Here's a game I came up with. It's a way of cheating the old desert island question a bit: You're going to be stranded on a desert island for 10 years. What 10 omnibus editions do you take with you? The only catch is that you have to pick omnibuses (and I am assured by a couple of different sources that that is the correct plural of "omnibus") that have ACTUALLY BEEN PUBLISHED IN A PHYSICAL FORM: you can't just slap together your three favorite Neil Gaiman novels together and then say, "That one!" Otherwise, all bets are off.
I'll go first. My choices are:
- The Lord of the Rings* - J.R.R. Tolkien
- The Complete Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle
- George Orwell Omnibus
- Crime Novels: American Noir of the 1950s - Various
- Three by Flannery O'Connor
- Complete Tales and Poems - Edgar Allan Poe
- The Chronicles of Narnia - C.S. Lewis
- Stephen King: The Shining, 'Salem's Lot, Night Shift, Carrie
- Fantastic Four Omnibus 2 - Stan Lee
- Absolute Watchmen - Alan Moore
* Yes, I know it's one novel, but it was originally published in 3 volumes, so it still counts as an omnibus
***
It's interesting - I actually ended up choosing a lot more material that I haven't read than I thought I would - I thought I would pick almost exclusively stuff I had read before.
