Here's a thread to drop in names of upcoming titles you're eagerly anticipating and, meanwhile, give the rest of us a head's up re: new releases that might be of interest.
On that note, I'm very much looking forward to laying my hands on the first Vernor Vinge novel in ages. One of my fave SF scribes. The book is called THE CHILDREN OF THE SKY and I believe it's out next month.
(And what do you know: a touchstone for a book that hasn't been released yet. Whoo hoo!)

The new Jeffrey Eugenides book sounds interesting:

Am I the only one rubbing my hands together vigorously enough to strike sparks?

I just picked up The Art of Fielding yesterday. I read the Vanity Fair excerpt a little while ago (http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2011/10/art-of-fielding-201110) and liked it a lot. I'm hoping for some Infinite Jest flashbacks transposed onto baseball.

Two good ones, A.J.
I've got my wife hooked on Jim Harrison--she's just finishing DALVA and loving it.

I'm definitely looking forward to the new Eugenides. Also in October is the English translation of Murakami's 1Q84, which I may have to wait on. 900 pages of surrealism might be a bit too much for me.
And of course, I'm still waiting on news of Chabon or Zusak's new book...

Haha, this isn't for another two years, but I just found out the juggernaut of a book I'm reading (A Suitable Boy, by Vikram Seth) is getting a sequel, A Suitable Girl, in 2013.
Awesome.
Awesome.

The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach, a quality book about baseball. Irresistible. Also, the new Eugenides, although I have a nagging expectation that it will be disappointing, and River of Smoke, the 2nd book in the Ibis Trilogy, by Amitav Ghosh.

Ah, I've already got River of Smoke (one of the advantages to being in Australia, we get English books much faster than the Americans do!). Now to find time to read it.
I'm hanging out for the third in the Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch, The Republic of Thieves.
And now I'm peeved. Penguin Modern Classics are reissuing Chester Himes, and I was hanging out to buy them locally. It looks as if they're already out, but the local bookshop will not be stocking them. Harrumph. Book Depository, here I come.

#4 No, you're not the only one but the copious amounts of drool are preventing me from actually bursting into flames.
ETA - I just checked the book out on Amazon - student life, Austen, Eliot (George), Darwinism, 19th century literature, religious obsession - it's like he got into my head and stole my wishlist!

8: I'm dying to get my mitts on 1Q84, and though I'm certain its 900 pages will have some surrealism in them, what I've always liked about Murakami is that along with the surrealism there'll be plenty of the mundane, too. (Spaghetti anyone?) Murakami weaves the fantastic and the mundane together as elegantly as any author I can call to mind.

13: You'll be waiting a while for that one. Scott Lynch (apparently) has depression issues and as such his writing has dropped to pretty much... nothing. "Republic of Thieves" has been 'coming soon' for years now.

My sympathies for Mr. Lynch. Hope he manages to tame his "black dog"...

First chapter of 1Q84 (Q-teen Eighty-Four) available online - but only for those on Facebook.

Yes, I've been following Lynch's blog. Dreadful stuff, depression. But he does seem to be coming out of his shell at the moment (phew) and I thought I read (months ago!) that the third book was off being edited or some such. I may have that completely wrong however, my memory's gone to the dogs.

Can't wait for The Islanders- I'm totally hooked on Christopher Priest. Also looking forward to River of Smoke and The Cat's Table.

I heard that the newest Scott Lynch book will be out in December and I ....cannot...wait!

I've got The Art of Fielding scheduled for the dark, dark days of early February before Pitchers & Catchers. I hate the off season.
