While I do like the Bolitar series, I get VERY annoyed with Coben writing them as if they were stand alone novels. He gives the same information over and over and over again in each book. The same phrases, the same gags - word for word. It overly caters to new readers and doesn't give the loyal follower a break. I hate that and have read other series writers who do a much better job. Grr.

I was stuck at Borders last night, waiting for a ride home. I read the first couple of hundred pages of The Woods. Drat, I usually wait for the paperback to come out to save some $$, but I now I won't be able to wait that long. First I'll check out the used stores for a copy . . .

I just finished “The Woods”. Great read. Maybe one of his best.

This was in Harlan Coben’s last newsletter.....

The next book is a stand-alone thriller called HOLD TIGHT, coming out April 15th, 2008. In a quiet suburb, the lives of five families collide in surprising, tragic and even violent ways. More on this to come, but man, I can't wait for you to read it. Oh, for those who wondered about the ending of THE WOODS, well, Cope has a small part in this one so you just might learn a little more (no Myron in this one -- well, maybe a sentence for those reading closely).

I finally found a used "The Woods" and finished it. Actually, I started over because it had been so long since the Borders incident (see #6). I liked the book, but don't you think that Coben arranges these complex situations that seem completely unsolvable, only to have them end weakly, without the same ingenuity of the set up? Just my opinion, but I WILL be looking for the next one!

To be honest, I detest his sports series. I enjoyed his last few stand alone books such as Gone For Good but his sports series isn't enjoyable for me at all. If I accidently buy one of his sports series, I'm bummed for days. I think its just that I don't really like serial characters. But his stand alone books, I really enjoy those.

10> I'm the opposite - but hey, almost different genres :) The few stand-alones I've read, I've liked, but I do not normally read those type of books.

Newest HC newsletter:

Harlan Coben Newsletter

Lots of cool stuff, so let's get to it:
HOLD TIGHT, my new novel, comes out April 15th. You can preorder it now here:
http://www.harlancoben.com/static/novels/ht.htm

You can also read the first two chapters here:
http://www.harlancoben.com/static/novels/ht.htm#excerpt

Both PUBLISHERS WEEKLY and BOOKLIST gave HOLD TIGHT starred reviews, PUBLISHERS WEEKLY saying, "COMPULSIVE PAGE-TURNER... How do you weigh a child's privacy against a parent's right to know? How do you differentiate normal teenage rebelliousness from out-of-control behavior? When and how do you intervene if suicidal signs appear?... Coben plucks each of these strings like a virtuoso. The 'this could be me' factor lends poignancy to the thrills and chills." I can tell you that these are my best early reviews ever -- and the most buzz I've seen for a book since I wrote TELL NO ONE.

THE HOLD TIGHT BOOK TOUR, beginning April 13th, will hit Ridgewood, NJ; Boston MA, Ann Arbor, MI, Bowling Green KY, Nashville TN, Naples and Palm Beach FL; Houston TX; the Los Angeles Times Book Festival; New York City and East Hanover, NJ. The dates and times and details can be found here:
http://www.harlancoben.com/static/appearances.htm

Hope you’ll come out and say hi. Do NOT bring cookies. My figure. Think about my figure.

MYRON TV SERIES? Help do the casting.
Hart Hanson, the creator and executive producer of the TV series BONES, is writing a pilot for Twentieth Century Fox studios and Fox network to bring Myron and the gang to a TV near you. The working title -- and this could very easily change -- is PROMISES AND LIES. Okay so let's hear your casting suggestions for Myron, Win and Esperanza. Keep in mind that this is a TV series, not a movie, so if you're thinking, say, George Clooney or Vince Vaughn, you're probably wasting your time. That's all the details I know now. As I know more, you'll know more. You can email your suggestions to casting@harlancoben.com. Yes, I will try to read them all, though please don’t expect replies. Thanks!

Lastly, the French movie TELL NO ONE, which was a huge box office hit and was nominated for nine Cesar (French Oscar) winning four of them, will be released in theaters in the USA in June (it was already released in the UK and Australia and is now out on DVD) with English subtitles. I don't have details yet or know when it will be on DVD, so keep checking the website. In the meantime, you can see the trailer here:
http://www.europacorp.com/dossiers/nldap/uk/index_uk.html

That’s it for now. Thanks for all you do.
Harlan

Hold Tight”! That’s the title and my recommendation when you read Harlen Coben’s latest. Very VERY good. The plot is intricate, but I can’t comment on anything without spoiling it.

I just finished The Woods, one of his best so far, by far. But I've been a fan forever, and it's hard to choose a favorite.

The Woods was my first Coben book, and I loved it. I'd heard of the Myron Bolitar books, but had never tried any. I started on them, and love them, too, but they're quite different from woods. I'm looking forward to this new book, I've got a hold on it at the library, and am anxiously waiting for it to be my turn.

Play Dead was his first novel and definitely not my favorite, but don't let that put you off of his other novels.

I totally agree. I felt like the stories were too convoluted, then they just ended and wrapped everything up a little too nicely. Still a decent read, though.

I friend of mine recommended Myron Bolitar novels as good reads. I've finished the first 3 and really enjoyed them. Yes, they are not perfect. I sometimes tire of Myron speculating on the mystery. You know his speculation are never right. I've added a few of this other novels to my read list.

Just finished Hold Tight and it was awesome! I read it completely in one day...couldn't put it down. I like almost all of Coben's stand alone novels; the Bolitar are ok, but not as good as his stand alones.

I've read Tell No One some time ago but didn't like it much. Recently, I've read The Woods and it struck me that this is basically the same story with minor changes. It's all about someone disappearing in the past and resurfacing years later which causes some big conspiracy to break and a few people show that they are not what others thought them to be. Are more of Coben's books based on such a story or was I just unfortunate in picking these two?

The only Cobenbook I read was Just One Look which I finished not too long ago and I thought it was dreadful.I really think this guy is overhyped. It was a very silly suspense novel with very few thrills in it.

Total agreement, but had a little trouble getting into it at first. I read all Coban's books when I see them. The stand alone novels are my favorites.

A french film has been made based on a Coban book.
It's the one where the man's wife is dead but he gets
an email from her and he suspects she is still alive.

I hated my first Coben book Just One Look but
I'm listening to The Innocenton audio and I'm half way through now and I think it's just sensational so far. There are some tricks that strike me as being Coben'scliches (the sins of the past, families being intertwined)but the thrills are so far very exciting and I listen to the book as regularly as I can.
Has anyone else read this book? It makes me want to read more of his work now after almost totally giving up on him before.

alans, I've always enjoyed Coben even though I think the resolution of the plots is usually something of a letdown after the unfathomable twists his stories begin with. Obviously, everyone's taste is different, but I hope you will give him another chance just because I've enjoyed his work.
