Plot points I remember:

Even though I read it as a kid I don't think it was intended for children as it had some adult themes

Starts off with a kid, I think he kills someone but ends up on the run

He grows very tall, I think it was over 7 feet

He spends time in a circus/carnival/freak show

He meets a female sword swallower

He is dying due to his large size, I know he dies at the end but he dies from something else since he knew his condition would kill him anyway.

I think he eventually had some sort of political/religious importance in the story but cannot remember what it was or even if it was really in the story.

Since I read it in I think 4th or 5th grade it would have been in the 70's

That rings no bells for me, but it sounds like something Ray Bradbury would write.

I don't know your book, but there are several books in the Ender series by Orson Scott Card (like Ender's shadow, Shadow of the hegemon, Shadow puppets, and Shadow of the giant) featuring Bean, who has a genetic condition that causes him to keep growing. The other details don't fit, though.

Yea I have read all of the Ender books but the one I am looking for would have been out in the 70's way before Ender. I do remember something about a tree being on the cover and I think there was something about a tree in the book (No it wasn't Big Fish) This is maddening, I can't remember.

Damon Knight's novel The Man in the Tree has a kid who accidentally kills a bully and is pursued by the boy's sheriff father, grows to over eight feet, joins a freak show, and becomes sort of a Messiah figure by the end. Among other things. There's a tree as well. However, it wasn't published until 1984.

Yes that is it, I had found it and was coming back here to post it. Thanks though, for some reason I thought I had read it in the 70's not the 80's.
