A fiction book for adults, has to be from the mid to late 90's because I bought it in the bargin bin in Canada in 2000. About a woman who goes to Casablanca(?) to meet a friend and finds that he has disappeared but has left his diary behind. She follows the clues in his diary to find him and eventually disappears herself. I beleive the title makes reference to the hajj.

The journey is both metaphorical as well as literal. I believe that the book was in soft cover and throughout the book were little notes(clues) as if we were really reading her friends diary.

This sounds so familiar to me.... At first I thought it sounded like one of Barbara Hodgson's books, but I don't think it is.
Sorry, not very helpful, I know.
