TPBM knows the difference between the two.

The way back

2SomeGuyInVirginia
Oct 23, 2011, 10:07 pm

Yes! It's a trick question. There is no difference between 'the two', only space.

TPBM is on the radar.

3RandomActofMuse
Oct 23, 2011, 10:45 pm

Depends. Whose radar?

TPBM also feels like Thread 62 went by awfully fast (even if it didn't, really).

I agree it did seem to go by quickly. .

TPBM knows how to make a really good drink

5Boobalack

Yes, I do.

TPBM will tell us what said good drink is.

6xorscape
Oct 24, 2011, 1:17 am

Um, you make a great smoothie. Or margarita. Or sangria. Or iced tea.

The person below me will tell us what he or she would like Boo to make, or would just like to be drinking.

7siubhank
Oct 24, 2011, 8:01 am

I would really like a large vodka, valium margarita, but it's too early in the morning for drinking. What I'd really like, just for a few hours, to be the kind of woman who yells, stomps and generally behaves badly to get her own way. Sadly, I'm not wired that way.

TPBM will tell of a civilized way to deal with with disillusionment of a large nature.

8SomeGuyInVirginia
Oct 24, 2011, 8:35 am

Don't go all 'Valley of the Dolls'; that didn't work in the book and I've never known it to cure anything in life, either. If you've been shafted, figure out what you want and then make your decision known. Control whatever aspects you can, turn the shit fan off/around whenever you can, and it's all right to go ape shit, too.

TPBM has something really unusual in the house or outside of it.

On the patio in my back yard, I have, and still use, the redwood picnic table and benches that my parents bought back in the '60s, in New Jersey.

Congratulations goes out to RockStarNinja for posting the 25,000th message (overall) - #4.

As for the speed at which the threads have been reaching 400 (more or less), both of the last two threads have taken 26 days to reach the threshold, slower than any of the previous 19 threads. Our fastest thread was #2, where we averaged 44 messages per day; our slowest was #10, at less than 9 messages per day.

Clearly, the perception of time is... fleeting.

TPBM knows what is "special" about today.

Besides the fact that it is United Nations Day? It is the day I finally got hubby to help me clean and polish the hardwood floor in the living room.

Nope, but my sister has three tanks and 18 fish among the three; 9 in one tank, 8 in another, and a solitary make betta in the third.

Not yet, but I'm going to a quasi-political event tonight that may cause me to say something that I've never said before -- I don't know what that might be.

The person below me is politically active in their community.

15Boobalack

I was at one time, but, heck, it was all politics.

TPBM volunteers with the community literacy program.

No. Perhaps I should.

TPBM misses reading aloud since their children grew up

17nhlsecord
Oct 24, 2011, 6:20 pm

I used to but my first student/victim slipped my wallet out of my purse (I got it back when I drove him home) and my second wanted nothing to do with reading, just wanted a baby sitter.

TPBM also has an interesting experience with volunteering.

18morningwalker
Oct 24, 2011, 7:10 pm

Wow, I go away for the weekend and miss so much. Two birthdays (Happy belated to Boo and Mr. D.) and a new thread. I too had a birthday over the weekend and spent it with my daughter. We had a great time and while there I went with her to do recycling and they have a building at the center that people can recycle books, so of course I came home with another stack of to-be-reads. It's getting out of control.

As for volunteering experiences, I think the last voluntering I did was for the local wildlife rehabilitation group. I volunteered to serve at their annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser and somehow got sucked in to chairing it for the next 3 years until I said enough. I'm getting better at saying no now.

TPBM has also said yes and regretted it.

TPBM has said "yes" even more often.

24rolandperkins

The short answer is: Who, ME?!"

The long answer is: I tried to figure out if "many" is the right word, but my calculator isnʻt working.

TPBM rides a bike everywhere.

31WholeHouseLibrary

Used to.
From northern NJ to western Fla.
From Geneseo, NY to northern NJ.
Commuted 22 miles, round trip, even in winter, in NJ.
And 9 miles, round trip, here in Texas.
Then it became too dangerous, so I gave away my custom-frame bike.

TPBM never gives anything away for free.

I haven't, but I bought some that I loved a few weeks ago, and after they burned down I took the excess wax from the holders and put it into a glass container and put it on the stove so it melts when the stove gets hot.

TPBM is cheap and proud of it.

37Sophie236
Edited: Oct 26, 2011, 4:52 am

Not cheap, but - as the Scots term it - canny. I certainly hate wasting money, and I actually prefer second-hand clothes, books, etc!

TPBM has a good money-saving tip.

38karenmarie
Oct 26, 2011, 8:58 am

Buy books at thrift stores. They're usually about 10% of the cover price. Also, go to Friends of the Library sales. You can get current hardcover fiction for $5/less per book and it's been my experience that you can get almost-new-looking copies.

TPBM has more than 100 books in their house that they haven't read yet.

39siubhank
Oct 26, 2011, 9:09 am

At a guess, there must be at least that many. Some I know I will probably never read, the phase or interest passed before I got to it. The ones I'm determined to read have a little baker's rack of their own. I was only going to add one when I had read one, but I found there is room to lay books sideways on top of other books.

TPBM loves to give books as presents, especially to children.

40SomeGuyInVirginia
Edited: Oct 26, 2011, 11:58 am

I do, but with the coolness factor of pop-up books rising dramatically, I sometimes find I keep the book and write them a check instead.

>>Jeez, I've hundreds of books in my apartment I haven't read. I give almost all fiction away once I've read it; I'm trying to winnow down.

TPBM has strong feelings about not giving children gift cards.

412wonderY
Oct 26, 2011, 12:14 pm

Absoblumin'lutely. I even pre-unpackage the toys so there is no time delay before we can play.

TPBM can still win at tiddley-winks or pickemup sticks or marbles.

42morningwalker
Oct 26, 2011, 12:48 pm

I never learned to play marbles, but I loved pick-em-up sticks and tiddley-winks and jacks (played jacks all the time). Don't know if I could still win though. Recently got beat at a new game called Querkle. Sort of follows scrabble rules but with colors and shapes rather than words, if that makes sense???

TPBM has less to whine about.

51theretiredlibrarian
Oct 26, 2011, 7:34 pm

Yeah, I'm feeling pretty good. Few aches and pains, allergies under control; a little money in the bank, hubby & I are both employed; most debt paid off; only one car payment'; no children in the house; a beautiful granddaughter. So I really have nothing to whine about.

TPBM has stayed at a haunted hotel.

52jillmwo
Oct 26, 2011, 7:58 pm

Actually, I have lived in one that was purported to be haunted. My father was stationed at Fort McNair in Washington DC and we lived in the house on post that had been the jail for Mary Suratt following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln before she was hung for her participation. She was said to walk the house with an infant in arms (her grandchild). I never saw her, but she supposedly haunted the room in which I slept.

The person below me believes Civil War ghosts are entirely plausible.

53RandomActofMuse
Oct 26, 2011, 11:57 pm

Well, if other ghosts are plausible, why not Civil War ghosts?

TPBM ain't afraid of no ghosts.

54Sophie236
Oct 27, 2011, 5:11 am

Not as far as I know, but I haven't (knowingly) met one yet. However, when I was seven, my parents moved house, and my mum ended up using me as a kind of pit canary - if I came rushing out of a prospective home shrieking, then my parents didn't bother checking it out any further. I was probably very good at smelling out damp, or radon gas, or something, but some places Just Did Not Feel Good.

TPBM has picked apples from a tree.

64Mr.Durick
Oct 28, 2011, 1:22 am

We had a an apple tree outside the den when I was a lad. My parents did nothing to see that the apples flourished, but sometimes one gnarled specimen would be pluckable, and I have plucked more than one -- ate them too although they were one of the less sweet varieties. After I left home my parents took to seeing that the fruit was protected from insects, etc., cleaned out the flue so that they could have a fire in the living room, and did several other things that they hadn't wanted to bother sharing with their kids.

I have never picked cultivated strawberries, but the person below me has.

67rolandperkins
Edited: Oct 28, 2011, 2:36 am

I donʻt wonder very much, because Iʻm very used to
changes of terminology, and arguments about what is
the correct term for an economic situation.
Harry Truman said that a recession is when your next door neighbor is out of work. A depression is when YOUʻRE out of work.

TPBM knows what "Depression/Recession" was called before the
1930s (and there were several of them); itʻs a 5-letter word,
today used more by psychologists than by economicst.

71siubhank
Oct 28, 2011, 9:45 am

I predict there will be gnashing of teeth and wailing in the dark. Actually, most of us will just keep soldiering on, like there's a choice. One nice thing about having Scots thrift drilled to the bone is that we have rarely lived beyond our means (trip to Europe) so we are not going to be much worse off.

TPBM has a different take on the matter.

72morningwalker
Oct 28, 2011, 12:38 pm

No, I agree with you. I think we want our cake and eat it too. Living within our means, using common sense, and being accountable for our own actions are a few things we need to bone up on.

TPBM has read their horoscope and is expecting something to their advantage from a dark stranger.

77SylviaC
Oct 29, 2011, 9:15 am

Haven't read my horoscope, but some of my recent encounters with strangers have involved: (i) having a large stone flung at my windshield, (ii) my husband's truck being stolen, (iii) my children's school being threatened with closure. Granted, the stone incident was accidental. Nonetheless, at this point, I believe it would be safest to lock myself in my house, go to sleep for 5 months (thus missing winter, too), and avoid all strangers, dark or otherwise.

Boy, howdy! Remember me going on about editing a book, and how I wasn't going the author get away with one of the characters driving nine hundred miles of back roads in less than ten hours? We met today; I'm about one third of the way through his book, and he's decided he's going to pay me (an unspecified amount) more than we agreed upon for the work I'm doing for him. I'm the fifth person to read through his manuscript, and I'm finding more issues than the first four people combined.

TPBM read the above, and plans on buying lots of stock in a company that makes red ink.

TPBM wishes Mr. House had edited some of the books he or she has read.

//It is rather disappointing, though, to think that authors are not more careful in the first place.

I had a nice thing happen to me today. Hubby went to the Library Book Sale, as I'm unable to go, and bought 15 books, only two of which I already have. Not to worry, I'll give them to my daughter. Yes indeed. Although our daughter graduated from high school in June and is at college, ysterday husband and I went to her high school's 4th band competition of the season (she was in Marching Band for 3 years). 87Boobalack

TPBM has never learned to cook for just two people.

88RockStarNinja
Oct 31, 2011, 2:36 am

I do cook for just 2 people, but it's not necessarily for just 2 meals. When I cook I like my dinners to be able to last that dinner and hopefully for mine and my BF's lunches the next day.

TPBM knows a great recipe that can make it through a couple days.

89Sophie236
Oct 31, 2011, 5:15 am

Loads and loads - but cullen skink (a fine Scottish soup) is my favourite. Saute a couple of onions, then add a couple of pints of milk, season lightly, add chunks of smoked (undyed if you can get it) haddock and peeled cubed potoates - quantities are up to you - bring to the boil and then simmer until the potatoes are cooked through. Stir a little double cream through before serving. Tastes even better the second day!

Didn't carve any pumpkins this year, though it is something I enjoy.

Spend the lead-up to the midnight hour wandering through the crazy-costumed, oft-drunken crowds in Salem, MA. Nice fireworks display, which they do over the train station. Theory is, it's to lead people back to the train station so they get the hint and get out of town. Then we went back to the World of Witches Museum and toasted the end of the holiday season. Translation: we shared a little champagne, and then those of us who had a mind to got a little drunk on the liquid refreshment of our choice.

Now I'm back in my hotel room wondering if it's worth the effort to do laundry before I go home, or just pack stuff as it is.

Naps put me into a foul mood so I avoid them unless I get hit with a sleepy stick. A friend and his wife are about to have a kid; all I can think is, 'Big change from that weekend in Vegas, huh?' Yes, poet Troy Jollimore about whom I know nothing except what can be gleaned from the (public Library) book I have of him right now: At Lake Scugog* Princeton U., 2011).. Quite a few quirky items in it; but he is also good at making the entire poem be a unit and more than just a series of metaphorical surprises. 143RockStarNinja
Nov 6, 2011, 1:47 am

I have 2 that I do for christmas, jam cookies and gingerbread.

Jam/Thumbprint Cookies
1 C butter (2 sticks)
1/2 c sugar
2 egg yolks
1 tsp vanilla extract
2-1/2 c all-purpose flour
Jam of choice

Directions

Beat butter and sugar with electric mixer until fluffy.
Add egg yolks and vanilla and beat again
Gradually add flour, beating at a low speed
Cover and refrigerate dough at least 2 hours - abt 45 min in freezer

Bake

Preheat oven to 350°F
Roll dough into balls, flatten, and place on cookie sheets
Make an indentation and fill with jam
Bake for 15 min or until golden

Gingerbread

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
3 tablespoons molasses
1 egg
2 tablespoons water or milk
3 1/4 cups Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

Directions

1. Beat granulated sugar, butter and molasses in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with spoon, until well mixed. Beat in egg and water until blended. Stir in flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, salt, cardamom and cloves. Cover and refrigerate about 1 hour or until firm.

2. Heat oven to 350°F. Roll 1/3 of dough at a time on floured surface to 1/8inch thickness. (Keep remaining dough refrigerated until ready to roll.) Cut with floured 2 1/2inch gingerbread boy or girl cookie cutters. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Decorate with currants or candies. Sprinkle with colored sugar.

3. Bake 6 to 7 minutes or until set. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack; cool.

The gingerbread is the best when you buy whole cardamom seeds and ground them yourself.

Pecan Puffs, and "Best Brown Sugar Cookies".

Pecan Puffs from Joy of Cooking 1971 edition

“Rich and devastating.”
Preheat oven to 300F.

Beat until soft:
½ cup butter
Add and blend until creamy:
2 T sugar (yes, only two tablespoons)
Add:
1 t vanilla
Measure, then grind in a nut grinder:
1 cup pecan meats
Sift before measuring:
1 cup cake flour (I just use regular unbleached white flour)

Stir the pecans and the flour into the butter mixture. Roll the dough into small balls. Place balls on a greased cookie sheet or non-stick cookie sheet and bake about 30 minutes. Roll the balls in confectioners’ sugar while still hot, but leave on counter to cool. When cool, roll again in confectioners’ sugar.

Best Brown Sugar Cookies

Sift together:
4 cups unsifted all purpose unbleached flour
½ t baking soda
1 t cream of tartar

In large bowl, mix well, use hands:
1 cup butter, 2 sticks
2 cups brown sugar, 16 ounces

Add 1 ½ cups roughly chopped pecans, 2 slightly beaten eggs, and flour mixture to butter/sugar mixture. Dough will be very stiff.

Refrigerate about 30 minutes.

Make dough into rolls about 1 ¼ inches in diameter. Roll up in Saran Wrap, tightly close ends. Refrigerate several hours or until needed.

Pre-heat oven to 325F. Cut rolls into thin slices (1/8” to about 3/16”) and placed on non-stick cookie sheets, about ½ inches apart. Bake for approximately 16 or 17 minutes until bottoms are lightly browned.

Remove to counter and cool. Cookies will crisp up. (Lately I've been using my stand mixer because my hands aren't as strong as they used to be).

Of course I am - it's my favorite holiday!

I baked, pureed, and drained the pumpkin for the pies yesterday. (Yes, I use real pumpkins. I could use canned, but fresh pumpkin is cheaper, I enjoy that part of the process, and I get the seeds to toast!) It's in my freezer, waiting for three days before Thanksgiving to be thawed and baked into pies. I might need to buy another pumpkin or two; I lost two to powdery mildew and I got more pie requests than usual this year. I'm not sure I'll have enough with the three pumpkins that survived!

TPBM is getting excited about something else.

No, this is the time of year I hit my winter down cycle, even though I live in AZ. I think my body is just used to shutting down for winter, I did spend 28 years in Chicago. Round Thanksgiving, I'll start perking up. The good side of this is that I clean when I'm depressed and I now have newly waxed hard wood floors in one room, the cleanest kitchen in the west and several other projects, including removing all the books from one bookcase and moving them to another in another room, pending.

I cycle up, but the last week really got me down. I'm out of it now and sort of digging the Christmas vibe. I always string lights on the balcony and get a wreath, but I've never put up a Christmas tree. I might get a table-top this year; put it on the lie-berry table where the S/M collar props up the seed pot. I'm going to play craps over Thanksgiving; I love my folks but we drive each other nuts. I was down there for 5 days this week while she was in hospital and we parted ways Wednesday with the irresistible force of two like magnets repelling each other.

When I was 18 my family & I took a trip from New Brunswick to Toronto, through the states. We went through Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont Massachussets, New York & into Ontario. We stopped anywhere that looked fun (had my forst ever Ben & Jerry's in New Hampshire because we couldn't find anywhere to get a cone) & we went to Canada's Wonderland & Marineland = the best vacation ever!

Jenno_Canuck - we got our milk in bags in NB, too & now you can get it in bags here in the UK!

extensive? I don't know- but kitchen garbage except meat and grease all go into compost bins with weeds, leaves, some of the grass cuttigns and any other dead plant material that shows up. We have two bins - four foot cubes with wood and wire mesh sides and bottoms. They fill up about once a year and get emptied onto garden in the fall- stuff sits there until spring- gets redistributed. bins get filled with new leaves as they fall. Lather, rinse, repeat..

just an extension of Suburbia.

TPBM knows why they call the wind Maria.

209siubhank
Nov 10, 2011, 7:07 am

Because the person who wrote the song had a nasty break-up with Maria? I lived in Oklahoma for years and the wind there can be fierce, then I lived in Chicago, where, when I was young and thin, I nearly got blown off my feet on Michigan Ave. Now I live in AZ and what to my surprise have I encountered? Winds so strong I can't leave my wind chimes hanging most of the summer.

TPBM has another weather issue with the place of their abode.

210Carrotlady
Nov 10, 2011, 8:57 am

I live in a very old house, with a flat roof over the kitchen. Every time it rains hard, you need an umbrella in my kitchen, and I have to put all my cooking pots out to catch the rain dripping through. If it rains heavily for several days at a time, the water table in my garden rises and the water then comes up through the floor too, once to a level of 6 inches. The cat was not impressed!

TPBM has a dry, warm, nicely decorated home.

211SomeGuyInVirginia

I live on the top floor of a high rise, which has its pluses and minuses. Plus- view, nobody above me so I don't hear elephant feet and if there's a fire or somebody's tub overflows I don't have to worry about water running down into my place. Minuses- it's always warmer and more humid than any other floor, and if there is a fire or an elevator problem I have to hoof it. As for decoration- I like it but it's been called everything from cool to 'interesting', which is southern-speak for 'My god, has your mother seen this?'

TPBM will describe their place of abode.

212karenmarie

8 acres at the end of a cul-de-sac in the middle of nowhere, North Carolina. We're behind one of two tree-lines on our property. We have a creek. Pretty big house, 2 barns, and we're currently boarding 5 horses. (We do none of the work, get paid a small amount by our friend Larry who does ALL the work).

House has 3 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, library (was officially a bedroom but when we built, we removed the closet and put in 2 walls of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves), sunroom, rec room, home office, media room plus all the other standard-type rooms (kitchen, dining room, breakfast room, living room, utility room).

I love my house.

TPBM has downsized their abode and is perfectly happy with less responsibility.

213SylviaC

Sing along if you know the words . . .

Through the mirror of my mind
Time after time
I see reflections of you and me

Reflections of
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me

Oh, I’m all alone now
No love to shield me
Trapped in a world
That’s a distorted reality

Happiness you took from me
And left me alone
With only memories

Through the mirror of my mind
Through these tears that I’m crying
Reflects a hurt I can’t control
’cause although you’re gone
I keep holding on
To the happy times
Oh, when you were mine

As I peer through the window
Of lost time
Looking over my yesterdays
And all the love I gave all in vain
(all the love) all the love
That I’ve waisted
(all the tears) all the tears
That I’ve taisted
All in vain

Through the hollow of my tears
I see a dream that’s lost
From the hurt
That you have caused

Everywhere I turn
Seems like everything I see
Reflects the love that used to be

In you I put
All my faith and trust
Right before my eyes
My world has turned to dust

After all the nights
I sat alone and wept
Just a handful of promises
Are all that’s left of loving you

Reflections of
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me

In you I put
All my faith and trust
Right before my eyes
My world has turned to dust...

236SomeGuyInVirginia

Yee-HA! I like target shooting and fishing when you keep what you catch. I take no pleasure in hunting, but will if the economy reverts to a barter system or the dead rise up to feast on the living.

(I'm sure I heard an exchange of gunfire Sat morning (4:09 am) followed by arrival of several police cars, but I can't find anything in the news or police reports. It might not make the news and police reports lag 24-48 hours. Gunfire was common when I lived in DC, but not here. Wackiness. I woke suddenly when I heard 4-5 consecutive shots, followed by 4 returns from a larger gun (1-2-1). I don't suppose they will give away 3G connection with the Fire - or am I being too cynical. I would like a touch screen, though. I am currently reading more demanding books than I have for most of the past few years. It's been in the planning stage for several years. If I were going to do something politically radical, I'd sit in front of Michael Moore's house until he wrote me a fat check and shared that damn foot long hoagie he was eating with someone who was hungry. Damn leech. Damn leeches- Moore, Bar, Sarandon, Pelosi, Boehner. Names to indict with. I hate it when someone is so egregiously, grievously, gravidly wrong that they make me appear sympathetic of politicians and financial institutions.

//ETA- 275 Soph- I started #OccupyLibraryThing on twitter. Table for one but Tim didn't hate it. But you're right, the correct answer was 'Angelina Jolie's vagina.'

281Mr.Durick

It happens, but it is rare that I buy a book on speculation, that is judging from its cover. So some sort of recommendation is behind most book purchases, and I buy a lot of books. Not hooge, but plenty crowded. One of our local churches stages an annual booksale that lasts an entire week. Monday morning, I've been known to get into line at 6am with all the other crazies waiting for the doors to open at 9:00. Be sure to dress warm and bring a folding umbrella! The first hours are wild, like the fabled bargain basement sales. It's best to be small and agile to slip between the bodies, perhaps under the tables if you can climb past all of the boxes of books still stashed underneath. Cloth bags and backpacks are recommended, though finding the elbow room to manuveur said treasures into the bags is another matter. If your hand touches a book at the same time as another it is the less polite finder who wins. Dealers from out of town are particularly aggressive.
This year, I was only able to browse in the evenings, and so I only came home with a couple of boxes. Nonetheless, I scarfed up a complete shelf of one of my favorite obscure authors for 25Cents per.

No, but I once worked with a boy who could build really elaborate ones. But only when he was on very strong drugs for his behaviour. I much preferred him when he was running around trying to figure out how to make things explode (although others found him a bit trying).

TPBM has someone in their life they think would be improved by strong drugs.

She's already on them. MrsHouseLibrary is bipolar, and it's easy to tell when she's forgotten her meds. It's like bigamy - I'm married to two completely different people!

TPBM is looking forward to Black Friday.

I may buy a Nook for $79 that day, but I may also decide that the low price requires too many compromises in features, so I won't know until I actually leave the counter.

The person below me will hide out at home on Black Friday, my other option.

359RandomActofMuse
Nov 22, 2011, 8:10 pm

Yes - if I can convince my son to stay asleep.

We did Black Friday shopping last year. 3 am drive to Ft Myers, took 3 hours, with a bouncy hyper 4-year-old, while I was almost 4 months pregnant. This year I don't feel like braving the stores with a bouncy hyper 5-year-old and a sick 7-month-old. We are staying HOME.

TPBM is also staying home.

Yes! I've never gone shopping during Thanksgiving week. I don't enjoy crowds very much.

//SomeGuy, have a safe trip. That book is quite different from Angelou's books.//

TPBM is staying home for Thanksgiving, too.

Absolutely! If I don't, there's going to be nineteen people really upset with me! I'm cooking the bird.

TPBM has an opinion.

362RockStarNinja

Indeed, I have many, and on many topics.

TPBM couldn't care less about my opinions, but has strong ones about proper grammar.

I have very strong opinions indeed! I want a T-shirt bearing the logo "Pedantic Society - Accuracy Before Tact".

That's kind of a creepy word, when you try to answer.

Oh, that is indeed a skill I wish I possessed! I'm way to open. Sigh.

(For those of you looking at ereaders - I bought one for a trip. I am now hooked and have over 150 titles to be read. I still read print books, but my ereader is addictive.)

The person below me is sure glad someone invented a way to harness electricity.

366theretiredlibrarian
Nov 23, 2011, 3:11 pm

Oh, yes, that would be me. I'm also grateful to the person who invented indoor plumbing, antibiotics, and automobiles. The "good old days" included the outhouse, pumping water or getting it from the nearest body of water, dying of (now) curable diseases, and cleaning up after horses.

TPBM will tell us their favorite way to use leftover turkey.

Shhhh! Thanksgiving first, THEN Christmas. And Thanksgiving isn't till TOMORROW!

TPBM is also irked by Christmas's invasion of Halloween and Thanksgiving.

369Boobalack

Definitely. HallothankChris is just too much.

TPBM remembers when sports didn't overlap, and holidays were separate, rather than all run together.

Nov 23, 2011, 6:39 pm

Yeah. We used to say if baseball, football, basketball and hockey were all happening at the same time, it would signify the end of the world. We weren't so lucky.

TPBM has a good Thanksgiving book to recommend.

371carod
Nov 23, 2011, 11:10 pm

Circle of Thanks by Susi Gregg Fowler. Not exactly a Thanksgiving book but a great book about giving thanks.

TPBM celebrated Thanksgiving back in October like a reasonable person.

372Mr.Durick
Nov 24, 2011, 3:08 pm

Nope, I'm celebrating it today with a bottle of seltzer. I have bread and cheese for later.

The person below me will celebrate Thanksgiving tomorrow by not going to work and scoring at Black Friday sales.

TPBM has other ideas about how to spend Black Friday.

374SomeGuyInVirginia
Nov 24, 2011, 6:17 pm

Yes, but I'll be working too.

//News flash- BookCloseouts.com is currently having a 50% off sale with free shipping on order over $35 US (that's 50 p or a half loonie our British and Canadian cousins, no idea about the rest of you lot.) Last year I bought a few shipments from them and they were fine.//

TPBM has two jobs.

375SylviaC

Do they have to be paying jobs? I do farm work during the busy seasons and volunteer at a school several times a week.

//SGIV--I ordered 17 books from them yesterday. //

TPBM has never bought books online.

Nov 24, 2011, 10:17 pm

Hahahahahaha. You must be joking. I've bought a gazillion online. And I don't seem to be slowing down.

The person below me is judicious with his or her use of credit cards.

377WholeHouseLibrary
Nov 24, 2011, 11:04 pm

For the most part, yes. There are times we purchase things frivolously, but we pay our credit cards in full every month.

TPBM is still groaning from eating too much today.

378RandomActofMuse
Nov 24, 2011, 11:13 pm

I managed to pace myself, but I'm definitely full. We had two Thanksgiving Dinners today. Took the kids to see R in the morning, then my sister’s place for lunch-dinner, then my dad’s place for dinner-dinner, and then home to put the kids to bed.

TPBM believes that it is not Thanksgiving until _________________________ (in our house, it is not Thanksgiving until you have burnt the marshmallows on the sweet potatoes. Happened at both houses today!)

379siubhank
Nov 25, 2011, 6:51 am

Growing up, it was not Thanksgiving till Mama burnt the rolls. Happened every year. Now we do not have an 'until'.

TPBM has productive plans for today.

380PhaedraB
Nov 25, 2011, 7:58 am

Kinda. My roommates are out of town leaving me in charge of livestock and a diminished dog pack (only eleven; they took the rest to a dog show in Virginia). I have discovered we are out of dog food. Ruh-roh. Black Friday at the feed store for me.

TPBM pities the poor puppies.

3812wonderY
Nov 25, 2011, 8:52 am

Easiest commute of the year and it's going to be a pretty quiet day. I will not be going to any malls tonight.

TPBM made the black Friday scene.

383siubhank
Nov 25, 2011, 9:55 am

Nope, I've boycotted 'Black Friday' for years, I don't even buy online. I have my Christmas shopping lists made and I will spend tomorrow obtaining them. I might add that I have one brother and five sisters, 14 nieces and nephews and three great-grand nephews. I have to mail everything back east, so it takes an early start.

TPBM has a managable sized family.

384SylviaC
Nov 25, 2011, 11:57 am

Just four of us in the immediate family, and one brother with a wife and two kids. There is another sister-in-law with a very small family, but while we have a Christmas dinner with them, we no longer exchange gifts.

TPBM has already finished Christmas shopping.

385SomeGuyInVirginia
Nov 25, 2011, 4:51 pm

I haven't even started. It's all going to be stuff I can buy online. Probably.

TPBM buys a year's worth of cards (birthday, Christmas, holiday, etc.) at one time. Like a sensible person. Or so I've heard.

386Mr.Durick
Edited: Nov 25, 2011, 4:59 pm

As far as I'm concerned cards are a commercial substitute for a handwritten expression of personal good will. I gave up cards some years ago.

The person below me no longer sends a thank you note when someone has done something for them.

Nope, I sent one to a work colleague at another (sister) hotel the other day.

TPBM will be away for Christmas

388abbottthomas
Nov 25, 2011, 6:36 pm

,,,,,with the fairies, probably. But it's my role to cook the bird before descending into an alcoholic haze. I hanker after a goose but the abbess, a bird-watcher, thinks of geese like heron, magpies, blue tits and robins. Turkeys are lumped in with cows and pigs, presumably because they don't fly.

TPBM would happily eat goose.

389RandomActofMuse
Nov 25, 2011, 6:48 pm

No, I wouldn't. But then, I'm a vegetarian.

(Ostriches, emus, and penguins don't fly; would they be lumped in with cows and pigs too?)

TBPM understands that vegetarians aren't vegetarians because we love animals, but because we hate vegetables.

390Boobalack
Nov 25, 2011, 7:44 pm

That's funny, RAoM! I tried to be a vegetarian once, but my craving for beef was much too strong.

TPBM could never be a vegetarian for a similar reason.

//SomeGuy, I looked and saw a few books I'd like but, unfortunately, am a tad short of $$.//

391SomeGuyInVirginia
Edited: Nov 25, 2011, 8:54 pm

I don't believe nature selected humans to maintain a vegetarian diet, and God was merciful enough to make cows both stupid and slow. I gave up veal and pate, though. Too expensive.

//I hear you, Boo. Things is tough all over. I got a call from Citibank last weekend, they had been tracking me on my phone and wanted to know why I wasn't working. (Not really.) Bastards, I've got half a mind to default on the card and take the two-year ding to my credit rating. It's going to be that long before I can get back my down payment I had in hand when I lost it overnight back in 08- still I don't want to be a lame as the financial industry. I'm asking for a Kindle for Christmas, but I've decided to get the cheapest model. I also want a Sig Sauer P556 SWAT pistol. Imagine the monster from Alien and it spits bullets and you've got it, but I'm going to have to kick in half for that. I've got a mild tremor in my hands, so I need a heavy gun with a long barrel that has built-in stability. First gun I bought was a S&W snub nosed .38 which was the worst I could have chosen; kicks and I still haven't gotten to the point where I can consistently squeeze the trigger without jarring the barrel . I've got a Lugar .22 long rifle that puts the bullet wherever I want it, but the damn thing is a pain in the ass to reassemble. I mention this because I'm heading to the range now and have shootin' on my mind.//

TPBM regularly practices shooting.

392siubhank
Nov 25, 2011, 9:12 pm

No, but I did get a chance to shoot with my great grandfather's Colt revolver. He was a sheriff in Texas. That is a heavy gun. I'm pretty good with a rifle, but am basically a city girl, so don't own any.

TPBM has great plans for the weekend.

Very much so. I like to have leftovers for lunch the next day so I can have a hot lunch at work. I eat lunch at 1:00 after being outside supervising children and appreciate a hot lunch.

It's my birthday today and I splurged and had dinner out, so no leftovers for tomorrow.

I actually got a great deal on Amazon for something I was specifically looking for - a DVD for a cousin for Christmas. I got it for $6.99. With Amazon Prime, that's what i t cost - $6.99 - no shipping, no tax. Sweet.

//SGiV - on Thanksgiving a cousin brought his air rifle. Daughter brought out her Ruger .22, 12-gauge shotgun, and .22 pistol, and various family members and friends shot at diet Dr. Pepper cans and into the distance. Since we live on 8 acres at the end of a cul-de-sac in the middle of nowhere, we were in no danger of hitting anything living. I was too busy with Thanksgiving prep, but yesterday daughter brought out the shotgun and pistol and I got to fire them. Loud fun, even with ear protection. Husband and daughter said that my grin got bigger with each round fired on the .22. And the kick from the shotgun was amazingly powerful. Had the butt firmly tucked into my shoulder so didn't bruise, fortunately, but was still surprised at the power. Fun and games in the country.//

Aaaaah! Yes! Aaaaah! I'm still trying to judge between the 1st gen Kindle and the newer touch screen Kindle. I'm leaning toward the touch just because the screen/e-ink contrast is supposed to be better than the 1st gen. That's a great price, Xor, for the keyboard version. I live close to a Target but it's not on sale today; keeping fingers crossed for Monday.

//Carod! Happy Birf Dee!//
