Wife read it...wants to read again. She said she got through the first 50 pages or so, then 'put it down', and never got back to it. Disappeared over the years of moving and such...

August by Judith Rossner was published in 1983, and was a New York Times notable book. Showing her the cover images might let her remember whether this was the book.

Not This August by C. M. Kornbluth? OK, very unlikely. Still, not that many books with "August" as a prominent part of the title, I think.

Actually, there are quite a few, as I found by doing a "titles only" works search on the word "August"

Thank you duke_dom. That's the one! I showed her the pic of the book, and as soon as she saw the 'couch', she pointed at the computer screen and said, "That's It!"
