I read this book around 1990, it's about a young girl living in some future dystopian society that is literally underground. She and a small group of others escape, I believe there is an older man and a boy in their party.
I specifically remember that there are surveillance cameras everywhere, but that in some places they have been vandalized. The young girl protagonist is surprised at seeing daylight for the first time. At one point they forage for food and bring her an egg to eat, which she thinks is a rock until they crack it.

Thanks to you both, it was This Time of Darkness. Oddly enough I read through a few pages of posts and found another person asking about the very same book! Found a copy online and just got it in the mail today.

It is nearly unbelievable how many people ask about This Time of Darkness. That and House of Stairs. It's like clockwork. :)

And - is it All Summer in a Day? The Bradbury about Venus. There is a Frequently Requested Stories page, but it's in the Wiki and mostly gets ignored.

It is linked at the bottom of the Name that Book home page description, no wonder it is missed (though it is just above the bright tips for posting sign). Maybe it should be at the top and the link in bold! The Bradbury one is already there. I added This Time of Darkness by H. M. Hoover to the list.
