I read this book in the 8th grade which was in 1999, so the book was probably from the late 80's or 90's . .
The plot I can remember is about a boy, who I believe was either homeless or traveled around a lot with his parents (but they weren't a big part of the story as far as I recall)
There was a bully at one point and the first time the main character sees him he's big and scary, but then he goes to the same town again a few years later and they're about the same size. The main part I remember is that the main character and the bully race and the main char. turns around and wins the race backwards.
