Oh, I love being one of the first ones on the train. I can choose a nice comfy compartment.

I like derailed trains. They're carbon-neutral.

Remember, it's not about the destination, it's how you don't get there!

The lady at the ticket window said that multiple derailed trains happen and that I need to just choose one. Then I tried to get on and someone blocked the door. I had to try several cars before I could get on!

And all you have to do is like the Amazon page on Facebook, good luck for those who enter!

Do you think I can add a book I wrote as a book I read to my list? Because my 2011 books read list looks pretty sad.

I know I used to read more! What happened?

18ejj1955

I miss reading in November and December. Those months just seem to be mostly void of reading time every year.

21justjukka
Dec 6, 2011, 4:57 am

20: It's little wonder why with back-top-back holidays, assuming you're in the US. October, Halloween. November, Thanksgiving. December, Christmas. Why don't we move Thanksgiving to August, or something?

I have to get up for work in four hours, but I'm not feeling at all tired. *le sigh*

22pollysmith
Dec 6, 2011, 6:52 am

21 Because no one wants to roast a turkey in August;)

23ejj1955
Dec 6, 2011, 9:22 am

And also because it's a harvest festival, basically; what we're being thankful for is the food that has been harvested (and that, historically, would have been put away to last all winter). This may not make a lot of sense if you are, for example, in Florida or California, but for those in New England, November is about the right time, I think.

24justjukka
Dec 6, 2011, 11:51 am

True enough. Can't move Halloween, either, due to the significance of the time of year, and we'd have one helluva time moving Christmas. It's celebrated on January 7th in Macedonia, but if we moved it to that date, we'd have a few more weeks of advertising. There's no way companies would start any later for any reason.

The winter heating system makes it very dry here, so I run a humidifier all winter long. It's part of the battle to keep my skin from cracking and flaking! and also gives an edge in fighting off colds and flu, which have a better chance of getting you when you are dried out . . .

Wondering: How long is it acceptable to leave up Christmas decorations and lights? It's been a rainy day, and normally we take down the decorations on the 26th. I'm just not in the mood to start yet.

45jugglingpaynes
Dec 26, 2011, 4:42 pm

I usually leave mine up until January sixth, Little Christmas. Then I take them down the following weekend. Of course, I don't put out most of the decorations until late in December. This year we put the tree up on the 22nd. The only difference it the outside lights, which my husband puts up after Thanksgiving and leaves up until...April?

My Grandad was always preferential to the 12th day of Christmas (as noted by >45 jugglingpaynes:: 6 Jan.)

(but then....who says you HAVE to take them down???)

48foggidawn
Dec 26, 2011, 9:31 pm

My family often took them down on New Year's Day -- partly because it's a day off, to give us time to get the house clean, and partly because our Christmas tree (always, always a live tree) would be quite crispy by then. I like the idea of leaving them up through Epiphany (6 January), but since we always put the tree up shortly after Thanksgiving, it was not always practical!

49rissa
Dec 26, 2011, 11:46 pm

we do around the 6th. my mom usually leaves her tree up until the 9th or later. My youngest sister likes them to be up for her birthday party.

50biblioholic29
Dec 27, 2011, 10:52 am

Mine will also come down on the 6th.

51Mandy2
Dec 28, 2011, 9:27 am

Ours will most likely come down on the 6th but really it will depend on when the town tree pick up is. Which reminds me...I should find out with our town tree pick up is.

52Kasongo
Dec 28, 2011, 3:54 pm

I aim for the 6th, but sometimes with the show that is around the second weekend in January, it doesn't get done until after then. But this year it will be January 1 because Mutombu leaves to return to Iowa on the 2nd and I need help. Definitely before Easter is a good goal.

53justjukka
Dec 28, 2011, 8:46 pm

Why am I suddenly having trouble sleeping? And how is it that my husband keeps commandeering the middle of the bed?

59jugglingpaynes
Jan 3, 2012, 8:13 pm

Rozax: Could be worse. I get pushed to the edge of the bed, my husband takes half my pillow, and two cats sleep on either side of me, pinning my legs. On the plus side, I never get cold at night.

I'm trying to find this video from the Lord of the Rings bonus features. It was something of a kist done by the four hobbit actors. Three of them would be sitting together, complaining about the fourth, then he'd come back, they'd all welcome him warmly, then another one of them would get up, then the current three would complain about him, and so forth.

Had to play this game:

Vintage children's and young adult books
Scandinavian detectives and thrillers
Unique Library Thing Book Group
Baker Street and Beyond »
American Civil War

These make sense--had to think a minute about the Scandinavian detectives, but I suppose having the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series makes sense of that.

You can click to expand the list of suggestions and I found many, many groups I'd cheerfully join . . . but I'm afraid I'd then spend even more time reading threads and not doing useful, money-making things . . .

So normally my Alarm clock goes off at 6am. I either snooze to 6:40 get up and take Pepper for a walk or I wake up as soon as my alarm goes off and take Data for a walk. (He is not so good with kids and at 7am there are a lot of kids waiting for the bus) Anyway, my alarm for whatever reason didn't go off this morning. Instead I woke up to Pepper whining like crazy. As my alarm hadn't gone off yet I was getting really angry thinking it had to be like 5:30 in the morning "what does she want"...so I peaked a quick look at my clock and it said 6:38...That crazy little dog knows how to tell time. Data was still passed out on my legs.

111theretiredlibrarian
Feb 3, 2012, 1:00 pm

I used to have a cat who was my back up alarm system. If I didn't get up at the right time, she jumped on top of me and was pretty vocal. Interestingly, she seemed to understand about weekends, b/c she left me alone on those days. She's been gone some 5 years now, and I haven't had another as smart.

112jugglingpaynes
Feb 3, 2012, 3:54 pm

One of our cats likes to sit on the alarm clock. On various days, she's turned off the alarm, turned on the radio, opened the CD player door, or reset the clock. Then she walks across our heads and rubs our noses. I usually find it hilarious, but I can sleep in. My husband has alternately bribed her with food (It's usually 5am) or thrown her out and shut the door. Shutting the door isn't effective, because another of our cats panics if the door is closed and mews and scratches on it. Mind you, it doesn't matter which side of the door he's on, he still panics if we close it.

If given the choice, would your rather cross the Atlantic in a blimp, or stick with an airplane?

124foggidawn
Feb 14, 2012, 8:14 am

I wouldn't mind a short ride in a blimp, just to see what it's like -- but for a long trip like that, I'd probably stick with an airplane.

125ejj1955
Feb 14, 2012, 12:35 pm

I'd take the blimp, assuming a spacious seat or even a small cabin with a bed. If it's comfortable, I wouldn't care about how long it took.

126read_books
Feb 14, 2012, 5:58 pm

I'd opt for the airplane... a blimp ride would be really cool, but I'd feel safer in a plane.

What about the Goodyear blimps? Haven't they been flying around safely for a number of decades now?

129ErisofDiscord
Feb 14, 2012, 7:34 pm

Yep! And even if a blimp did get a hole in it, it would just float gently to the ground, rather than crashing magnificently like a plane. And the Hindenberg was full of flammable hydrogen, whereas nowadays blimps and dirigibles are full of helium.

130justjukka
Feb 14, 2012, 8:04 pm

The Hindenburg is a bit sensational, anyway. How many blimps have gone down vs airplanes, which are filled with flammable fuel?

I'm sure there are book festivals in Europe. :o)
Speaking of Europe, my son is supposed to be heading to Italy in June. We just sent in the application for his passport last Friday.

Then I realized yesterday that I didn't write in his height because we were planning on measuring him and we never did. *sigh* I knew everything seemed to go too smoothly.

after letting this percolate a while, I've decided against the airplane as there are too many 'hidden fees" these days but I'm not entirely for a blimp because what if it springs a leak? I like ejj's plan to stay stateside and go to Tucson. Have fun ejj!

If the blimp springs a leak, there's always duct tape. Try doing that if a plane springs a leak.

Thanks; I expect I will have fun . . . but I am going to be taking a plane there and back, as I'm in upstate NY now and Tucson is quite far . . . however, I would take the blimp if that were an option!

There is a duct tape like item on the market called DUCK TAPE, but I haven't seen or heard anything about it's uses & non-uses. Maybe it is just water resistant?

Also I thought of duct tape reinforced packing tape and/or plastic wrap as you suggested.

But hey,I'm not even ON the blimp!

Question for the parental types: Is it common for children to scream bloody-murder? The last time I did that, my dad, shall we say, corrected my behavior, because he'd kinda like to know when I'm actually in trouble. I was still allowed to squeal and squaller when playing with other children, but that blood-curdling scream was not acceptable. My mother explained that, just because I'm screaming doesn't mean anyone will actually come help me, because children scream all the time. I'm wondering what the deal is with the children around here. I'm not living in an even remotely shady neighborhood, either. There are just lots of young parents with small children.

176jugglingpaynes
Feb 24, 2012, 5:45 pm

Do you mean they are screaming outside, or at night? My oldest had night terrors until she was eight or nine where she would wake in the middle of the night shrieking. You couldn't wake her (we tried) so you had to ride out the screams. Really got the adrenaline going at two in the morning. I'm sure our neighbors loved us. :o)

If they are screaming while playing, well, don't know what to tell you. Some kids are louder than others. You could ask the parents to let the kids know they are too loud, but I don't have any other advice about that. I gave up correcting other people's kids when a crazy mom at a playground had a screaming fit at me. (And you wonder why the kids scream.)

179kirbyowns
Feb 25, 2012, 11:23 pm

I see this a lot on the playground. Kids have screaming matches to see who can scream the loudest or highest. We have a little talk with them about appropriate types of screams on the playground. We need to know if someone is really hurt or not. If they scream like they are, we won't be able to tell the difference from someone who needs us immediately.
