Fforde Ffebruary general discussion thread

Welcome to Fforde Ffebruary!

Since we may be reading some different books, I suggest this thread first for general discussion, then potentially different thread for specific books of there are enough readers? I am going to be starting in on First Among Sequels and then moving up to One of our Thursdays is Missing most likely. Which Fforde books will you be reading for Ffebruary?

I'll also be reading Shades of Grey. And like avatiakh, I have to find my copy that is lurking amongst the towers of books here in my home. :)

I've been thinking of reading The Eyre Affair, though I haven't made any definite plans yet (that would involve purchasing the book so that I can share it with my favorite aunt when I'm done with it). Perhaps I'll splurge and go for it. :)

Hmmm I may have to join you all in Shades of Grey then! :P

There are also the Nursery Crimes books! :)

I'm also planning for Shades of Grey -- a copy is on my shelves and ready to go, although it will probably be a week or so before I can start it.

I could go for The Eyre Affair, or The Big Over Easy. I have both waiting on the mountain range. I need to finish up a couple of others, tho, so it will likely be a week before I can start either.

Keep listing books you are interested in reading.. if there are not many requests we will discuss the book together in this thread, if there is enough to warrant a new thread then I will make another one :)

Have you had your toast today??

I have started with The Eyre Affair, but am planning on continuing with the Thursday Next series, then the Nursery Crime series. I have Shades of Grey in the UK, but won't get to it until March.

Feb 2, 2012, 7:48 pm

Since some still have to find their copies, I bet there will still be people in the thread to discuss it with you in March :P I may go back and read The Eyre Affair again, I do love the whole series :)

I'm pulled The Eyre Affair from my TBR when I was rearranging a couple of weeks ago. If the month goes well, I might try to fit in The Big Over Easy.

I've never read a Fforde book. Are there any Fforde fans out there with an opinion on what is the best one?

I would start with The Eyre Affair if I were in your position. And be prepared for some fun! :)

I have read most of them except the last two in the Thursday series. I have been meaning to re-read them first before continuing so I guess this month is it!

18/19 - yup, I would agree. Shades of Grey is a good starter one as well.

I am reading First Among Sequels right now! We should discuss it in this thread I think since there are fewer people reading it. I am enjoying it, but sad that they skipped so far ahead!

I plan on reading The Eyre Affair, but probably won't get to it until mid-month.

I've just finished Lost in a Good Book, and I am still really enjoying the series. Miss Havisham is a good addition to the series!

I have read other books in the Thursday Next series, but somehow missed Lost in a Good Book so that is what I am starting with.

I'm planning on reading the two Nursery Crimes books, the first five Thursday Next books, and Shades of Grey. (I likely won't get through all eight of these books.) I just finished The Big Over Easy today.

@ 23 -- Yes, Miss Havisham rocks! I wonder if anyone doing Fforde Ffebruary is also doing the Great Expectations group read...Miss Havisham's character would be a fun point for discussion. :)

I'll be reading Shades of Grey, and if I can finish that in time (with my other required reading) I'll be picking up Lost in a Good Book, #2 in the Thursday Next series.

Last year I read the Nursery Crime series and really liked it! I wish there were more books in the series....

@26: Ooooooo Fun! I am in the Great Expectations group and read Lost in a Good Book last year.... you are right that would be great for discussion!

I am also glad in the later books they keep adding in more pickwick :P

I re-read part one, and although I did enjoy it I like the later books even better. I think I just like the idea of bookworld ;)

They do get better don't they? I just ordered the last one so now I will get to read them all in order. And then when the next one comes out, I will start all over again!

Plock plock...

33soffitta1
Feb 13, 2012, 1:31 am

They do! I can't wait to start Something Rotten! Are there more books in the pipeline? He must be writing all the time! Have you read any of his other series?

34Yells
Edited: Feb 13, 2012, 8:01 am

After Something Rotten, there are two more which I haven't read but per wikipedia, they are part of the series but actually another series? Not sure how that works.

And then there is the Nursery Rhyme series which is good (2 books so far) and Shades of Grey which is also supposed to be a series. Wikipedia shows quite a few pending books so we will see what comes out first.

According to his website, Thursday Next #7 will be published ca. May 2012, the third book in his Dragonslayer series (currently published only in the UK) will come out ca. November 2012, and a non-series book will come out sometime in 2013.

I've read everything by him except the Dragonslayer series. It's supposed to be published in the US later this year, and I will read it when I can get it. I'm too cheap to pay trans-atlantic shipping.

36Yells
Feb 13, 2012, 10:23 am

35 - I just ordered the first Dragonslayer one from amazon.ca and it was a pretty good price. I had no idea that that series existed until I looked it up the other day.

There doesn't seem to be too many of us reading Lost in a good book, but that's as far as I am with the Thursday Next series. I expect I'll finish it in the next few days, and hope to keep reading the series beyond February.

38Yells

I just finished re-reading the first four of the Next series so I am now set to read ones that I haven't read yet.

Feb 20, 2012, 6:38 am

I'm in the middle of Lost in a Good Book and actually liking it more than The Eyre Affair. Not sure if I'll keep going with this series, switch over and try The Big Over Easy, or go on to other things this year and come back next year.

I was going to read Shades of grey but I've decided to skip Fforde February, don't really fancy re-reading any of the ones I've previously read and shades of grey sounds like a long prelude by reading the reviews, too many other books on the shelves sound more enticing....

I have a love/hate relationship with sequels. If the storyline is good, I love the fact that the end of the book doesn't mean the end of my interaction with the story & characters. But, because I read so much, I don't retain all the details of the story so a new book means a re-read of the older ones.

I just love Fforde's writing. I love all the literary references to decode and unravel. With this series, I don't mind the re-read because I uncover so much more each time. I do find, with the Next series anyways, they get better and better as the characters become more defined and you jump deeper into the plot. I just finished Something Rotten which seemed to sum up everything so it will interesting to see where the next two in the series take me. I guess they are new adventures for Next?

As an aside note, there are also sequels that I just don't want to have to re-read. I am also in the middle of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series and I must say, I can't wait for it to be over. I like the books and want to know what happens, but I really don't want to re-read them each time. I am three books behind now because I am waiting for the last one to be released so that I can read all of them through and move on. Serials are funny that way I guess!

A friend of mine won't even start a series unless the last book has already been published, I dislike reading series one after another as many authors keep reminding you about what happened in earlier books and that can be distracting. Although I can't leave too much time between series books or I really do have to re-read, it's a delicate balance sometimes

43dudes22
Feb 23, 2012, 8:41 pm

I've finished Lost in a Good Book, the 2nd Thursday Next book. I liked it very much better than the 1st one. No time for any more FForde books this month, so I'll start something else.

Feb 24, 2012, 4:46 am

I've just finished First among Sequels, and I am still really enjoying the Thursday Next series. I reckon I'll start One of our Thursdays is missing today, decamping to a cafe for a coffee and a slab of cake.

I have the two Nursery Crime books on my shelf here, but will read them after February. As for Shades of Grey, I am going to wait for more to be published. I am incredibly impatient (outside the classroom), so I like to have more than one book of a series to read.

Still cracking way at Shades of Grey, and I'm really liking it! It doesn't seem to matter what kind of world Mr. Fforde sets up, I always love it. I may end up finishing Grey after Feb is over (have 2 bookclub books and a library book to read before the end of the month - ugh), but I'm now itching to get back to the Thursday Next series - they're all staring at me on the shelf right now. I've only read the first book too, so that's a lot of staring! ;)

Fforde February finally gave me the nudge I needed to read one of the Fforde books I've had on my shelves for a couple of years. I really liked my first experience with The Eyre Affair. It's not the type of book I want to make a steady diet of, but it was a fun escape.

I just finished First Among Sequels and I must say that it is my favourite so far in the Next series. Hopefully I will have the series (what's been published anyways) finished by month end. I just bought a copy of The Last Dragonslayer but that will have to wait until later.
