For discussion of Shades of Grey! I will be reading this for the challenge as well since I have a copy and interest is high. :)

For other Fforde discussion see our Fforde February thread here:

Well just started it and its a perfect beginning: amusing and instant submersion in world without information overload. Liking the world building so far, very neat idea.

I'm in! I hope to start the book within the next week or so...I've read all the Thursday Next and Nursery Crime books, so I'm long overdue to read this one.

I've found my copy and have started reading, though need to finish a couple of other books before I can give it my full attention.
The link in post #1 is to the wrong book btw.

I'm hoping to start Shades this week, if I can manage to get my library books returned in time! I'm looking forward to it!

I'm just starting Shades of Grey, and I already have a question! In what genre(s) would you place this book? Could it be classified as science fiction? I have a sci fi category in this year's challenge, but I don't read extensively in the genre, so I'm not always sure what "counts." :) I'm inclined to think that it is sci fi, since it's set in a post-apocalyptic world, but I'd love to hear your thoughts! (And I can always put it into another category if sci fi is not appropriate, so I'm not worried on that score, haha.)

This book and his others would fall into the newish classification of Speculative Fiction which includes science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and cross-overs.

Started this morning....and I don't think the Saturday House Cleaning is going to get done today. :)

I've reached the one-third point and have set it aside until tomorrow. Lots of info to digest to understand Fforde's imaginary world, so my brain feels kinna melty. :) Totally loving it, though - eccentric and brilliant and sometimes funny.

@ 10 -- I'm about 1/3 done too! I'm enjoying Fforde's world very much, but I'm kind of wondering when the plot will get here...

>11 christina_reads: - I think maybe it's just all the little things that are making the story, rather than there being A Big Plot. We'll see what happens in the next two-thirds of the book, I guess! :)

Is there a spoiler thread for this book yet?

I was able to spend most of today reading, so I finished the book! I ended up really enjoying it; I've posted a full review on my thread. I'd love to talk about the ending, but I don't want to spoil anyone. As HRO pointed out, there's no spoiler thread yet -- should I start one? The alternative would be to wait until everyone's finished reading it and then talk about spoiler-y stuff. Thoughts?

I reckon start a spoiler thread. I finished it a few days ago and feel a bit like a party pooper as I didn't like it much :( Too much world building not enough plot. Still good for discussion I suppose! Anyway review on my thread.

The more I read, the more it seems confirmed that it's the little things that are making the story. It's not your usual Conflict-Resolution style plot. I'm enjoying it, but a few pages goes a long way for me. The pacing is slow and there's a lot of information to absorb. I'm reading other stuff alongside it.

>13 christina_reads: I want to wait to read your review after I've finished. About the spoiler thread....it doesn't seem like many people are reading yet, but you could certainly start the thread so it's there.

I've set up a spoiler thread HERE. I hope that, as more people finish the book, we'll have some lively discussions!

I feel like it is more of a set-up book for a series, rather than a standalone Conflict-Resolution book. If this book was the only one, I'd be really unhappy. But as a series? Probably pretty great.

I finally finished it. It was mostly enjoyable but I have to admit that I turned the last page with a huge sigh of relief that it was finally over. I often felt that Fforde was dragging me through The Longest Book Ever Written.
