I read this book probably back in the mid '80s and would like to read it to my son.

I believe it took place in a park (I would venture it was Central Park, New York). Two young children, a boy and a girl, were playing and something happened (a squirrel or a ball went into a hole in the tree) and the children followed it into the hole. They discovered an underground cavern beneath the tree. I think there was even a description of the roots of the tree forming the ceiling of the cavern. I do not recall anything else about the plot or book.

It is a Ruth Chew book. They're all so similar it's hard to recall plots.

Maybe this one?
The Wishing Tree by Ruth Chew (1980). What is that CREEPY cat up to? Who is that WEIRD woman in the park? And that tree! Peggy and Brian are sure there is something SPOOKY about it. And they are right! A bird and cat that talk and a special tree in a nearby park involve a brother and sister in some magical adventures.

Or this one...

Thank you, bookel! I went to the Wishing Tree link, read the list, clicked the probable one and BINGO! The instant I saw the cover I remembered it! Woo Hoo! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post. I really appreciate it!

That's great! Yeah it had to be one of those! :)
That is one I haven't read yet (wishlist it). It's amazing how many of her books include trees in the fantasy!

I am ordering a copy of it from Abe.com. I would like to purchase you a copy to thank you for your help (and since you haven't read it, yet). How can I do that?

Gee, don't worry about that, thanks for the offer! It's a bit expensive on abe.com to send overseas from most sellers otherwise I would have purchased it myself. I'll just wait for a copy to come up on BookMooch.com or until I find a copy secondhand locally. Enjoy re-reading it!

Sorry for the late reply. One has to love the World Wide Web - I did not realize you were not in the United States. lol. Out of curiosity, what country *are* you in?

Australia. I do occasionally find Ruth Chew books locally, but haven't seen this one yet.
