Thought everyone might want to take a look at these. I've seen most of them but the first couple a new to me: http://lifestyle.sympatico.ca/Special%20Guides/Book%20Guide/beautiful_bookstores

I hadn't seen most of those yet. Thanks!

I thought it said 'most beautiful bookshelves' in the world, but I enjoyed the visual tour anyway.

My favorite is "El Ateno". I could get lost for weeks in that place...

El Ateneo is actually quite small. I would go there fairly often when I was living in Buenos Aires but, minus the pretty ceiling, I actually preferred the smaller bookstores. Plus the little cafe on the stage is not too good.

I love them, but why does it seem like the most beautiful ones are in Argentina and Portugal? It makes me sad to think that here in America we don't read enough to support such magnificent stores.

#5 ~~ Or what's worse, our bookstore's are just so commercial that they don't want to invest their money in beautiful bookstores. :-(

I'd rather they invest their money in books......

On a list similar to what began this thread there was a photo of "The Last Bookstore" in downtown Los Angeles. We visited after seeing it in the list. We did find a couple books to buy there but it was not a traditional used bookstore as we were looking for. Caravan Books, also downtown, is more in that class.
