Ooh, I have the sequel on my ereader. I must read it. Which I suppose answers the question of whether I liked book 1 :-D

I liked Tanyana. She had pulled herself up by her bootstraps only to have everything she'd worked for snatched away. And she was naturally upset for a while. And in denial for a while. But when she decided to make the best of things she threw herself into it wholeheartedly.

I liked the reveal that Devich was evil - and such a realistic evil, an "ah well, that's the way it is and I couldn't possibly change anything but I assure you I feel slightly sad about all this so you really should forgive me" sort of self-centerednes.

Pretty much ditto actually. Right down to the sequel on my ereader, but not yet read... (Which is creepy.)

I really appreciated that Tanyana was a person - as @Hatgirl said she was upset, and in denial. Normally main characters are perky, and make the best of every situation. It was so nice to have a character who wasn't. Particularly when you take into account the fact that she did have everything (which she had worked for) and lost it all.
