Reading this little book i was variously reminded of notes from the underground, a season in hell, demian, ask the dust, hunger, the daring young man on the flying trapeze, in youth is pleasure and le grand meaulnes... the tone is more playful than my references may suggest, which quality sets it aside from most other works of this kind. Walser was clever enough to include the smallest insights, and it is these which breathe the most life upon the dusty, wooden, shadowy stage. A lesson in subtle portraiture and sensitive instinct.
