I hope this is the proper place to post the following:
I've had a LibraryThing account since '05, but I've only just started using it actively. I'm inputting my library and have now gotten to the D's. I see that all editions of *Lost Dorsai* by Gordon R. Dickson have been combined.
The problem is that Tor's *Lost Dorsai: the new Dorsai companion*, first published in 1993, is nearly a hundred pages longer than *Lost Dorsai*, first published in 1980. It is really a double volume, containing both *Lost Dorsai* and a hundred pages of excerpts from Wixon's concordance of the Childe Cycle (i.e., the series to which *Lost Dorsai* belongs).
This seems to me to be analogous to your Fellowship vs. LotR example. I just tried to separate out the *Lost Dorsai: the new Dorsai companion* editions, but there are so *many* Lost Dorsai editions! I'm willing to spend the time necessary to patiently separate them all out and recombine them into two groups, if there is no faster way to do it, but it has occurred to me that if I do that without explaining, all my work could be undone with a few quick combinings on the part of some other well-meaning and tidy person.
I think there needs to be a note of disambiguation on the works pages of the two, like the one in German that is already attached to *Lost Dorsai* -- unless the group's consensus is that the hundred-page concordance is a distinction without a difference.

This is not a bug. This is people improperly combining. Go ahead and separate the editions and add the disambiguation notice.
And please post links to what you're talking about when you have an issue like this. It really helps track down the problem, if there is one.

I'm working on a response but I went ahead and just reposted your text from here. There are some annoying issues involved.
