Via an email query:

I read a book that was part of a series, written by a female author, and whose next series was scheduled for release in a few months. (This was around 2003-2005.) I waited and watched, but never saw it and now have forgotten her name and name of the series. I loved it because she had a unique way of writing about vampires and werewolves. In her story they lived together peacefully in modern-day Europe in a community set apart from humans. To my recollection they all appeared to be humans to anyone who might come into their community. The females (can't remember if they were werewolves or vampires) were becoming/had been infertile for a long time and a certain ceremony in a cave was to be held for one female who I believe was the first to become pregnant in a long time in order that she might carry the baby to full term. Also significantly prominent in the storyline was the fact that each one had a soul-mate -- someone they were destined to mate with for life and who, upon seeing this someone, they would recognize immediately. Unfortunately they didn't always recognize each other at the same time and this would make it difficult for the one who knew -- especially for the males as they were more than ready to mate. Also in the storyline, which you knew would lead into another book in the series, someone was researching family history and discovered relatives in America. They wanted to reach out, others didn't want them to and meetings were held to discuss what to do. I don't remember as much about the vampires, which makes me think it was more a story of werewolves . . . yet I still think the vamps were in there. The reason I think this is because it seemed one vamp woke up at night aware that the werewolves, in wolf form, were surrounding his house since something dire was happening that night and they needed him to join them. If there is anyone who might know of this author or the title of this book, I would be so incredibly grateful if you would tell me!! I'd love to start at the first of the series and work my way through. These were not, as far as I can remember, aimed only at teens and twenty year old readers. Thank you again!!

Can anyone help?

Sounds like the Carpathian series by Christine Feehan. All the titles start with 'Dark....'

I was thinking that same thing, but was a bit flummoxed because I've only read the later ones in the series and they're already in America then.

Their homeland is in Eastern Europe, and some of them still live there.

The first (latest) review on Dark Prince (the first in the series) certainly sounds like the OP...

Ding ding ding! The emailer says you all hit it with the first try. Well done indeed, and she asked me to pass along her thanks.
