Orange August 2012

I'll be reading State of Wonder for my RL book club. I've liked every Ann Patchett I've read, so I'm looking forward to this one.

I'm still working on Purple Hibiscus on audio book!

I have Gillespie and I by Harris from the library. And I have two other older winners (names escape me). Now to just find time to read them!

Oooooh.... Hope you love Gillespie and I as much as I did :)

Hello Orangees.....

I have to share this and don't know where else to post but to fellow OJ'ers.

I just looked at the upcoming Decatur Book Festival website (near Atlanta, FYI) and ERIN MORGENSTERN is going to be there!! I just about fell out of my chair! I LOVED The Night Circus so very much! My gf has already agreed to go to the festival but she is a total non-reader. Nobody else in my RL reads like I do so there's no one else to share my excitement!

Thanks in advance for putting up with my gushing. I have never been to this particular book festival but it is on my calendar now for sure!!

Wow, Tina!!! Enjoy - I'd gush too!! And let us know what happens. That's a great opportunity!!!!
Meanwhile, I'll read Larry's Party this month at least. My Orange reading fell off in July, and that's odd, but I hope Larry will get me back on track.

I am well into Gillespie and I by Harris and enjoying it quite a bit. I have an exam tomorrow morning (last one thankfully) and then I can read, read and read some more so I should finish it this weekend.

I just finished A Crime in the Neighborhood by Berne and I am still trying to absorb it. I liked it a lot but man, that kid ticked me off something fierce. She reminded me of a mix between Flavia (by author Alan Bradley) and the kid from Atonement by McEwan (Briony?). Throw in an epsiode or two of Law and Order SVU and there you go.

PS... I love Carol Shields. Just about everything she wrote including Larry's Party was good.

I enjoyed Larry's Party - no surprise there since it won Orange and so many people think it was a fine choice. I have The Stone Diaries and Unless and will certainly push them higher up Mt. Bookpile.

I finished State of Wonder and it lead to a great discussion in my RL book club. The consensus was that, scientific discoveries aside, the story really couldn't have happened as written, but it was a great story and a fun read. Most of the discussion, of course, was of the advisability of maintaining fertility throughout the life cycle. Not one woman was up for that. I loved everything about pregnancy in my 20's. In my 60's it might not be so enjoyable. In my 70's - oh, please!

(My first post here, thanks to LizzieD. It is good to be on board!!) I have just started Song of Achilles .... short chapters .... easy to read, so far ..... still forming an opinion about content but the writing is beautiful .....

Alas, August is slipping away, and I probably won't get to any Orange books this month. Very slow reading time for me as I focus on my work and family, but I am back in the swing of things now!

>#17 Yes I did :) It was actually chosen for our bookclub to read and it was great to be able to discuss it as a group. I read another book by Adichie Half of a Yellow Sun more recently and enjoyed it too. Very sad, though ....

I updated my thread with my August reads, but I also wanted to mention here that Monique Roffey's newest book Archipelago is fabulous. (Roffey was shortlisted in 2010 for The White Woman on the Green Bicycle.) Archipelago isn't getting much notice yet (I'm the only person on LT who has read and reviewed it!) but I'm really hoping more people will read it...and that it will be on the list for the 2013 Orange Prize.

I forgot to note that I did read an Orange book in August--There but for the by Ali Smith. I had had it out from the library for a long time and for some reason was having a hard time getting around to reading it--and maybe was put off by some reviews. I ended up liking it a lot, one of my favorites of August. The style and structure are very out there, and I loved the playfulness of the writing, but I there was also something very touching at the core.
