From what I remember it was set in dark ages and there was a girl who could cast spells who was fleeing a village under attack. She uses either gold or wooden icons (possibly supposed to be ancestors) to help her cast spells to escape. I would guess pre 1993.

Possibly The Spellcoats by Diana Wynne Jones - Tanaqui flees with her siblings and "The One", an icon from the family shrine. There's quite a bit about the icon and how it has to be put into the fire each year, and the fact that their family has different icons to the rest of the villagers and is only tolerated, not accepted, by the rest of the village. The girl is also a weaver and can weave words in the pattern of the cloth, and she finds out that this way she can cast spells against Kankredin, an evil enchanter working with the invaders.

Glad to help. Hope you enjoy it second time around. :) It's part of a loosely related quartet - you may also enjoy the other titles in the Dalemark Quartet even though they are set much later in the Dalemark timeline.
