Can someone recommend some books on the period known as "The Anarchy" (King Stephen and Empress Mathilda)?

Probably by Now someone's suggested the books by Sharon K. Penman about the Plantagenets? They start with "when Christ and His Saints Slept".

Elizabeth Chadwick's "Lady of the English."

If the OP is interested in history, King Stephen by Edmund King is a fairly recent release. I haven't read it but it's part of the Yale English Monarchs Series which I've always found to be quite good.

Another option might be The Reign of King Stephen by David Crouch. Another book I haven't read but Crouch is usually solid.

And, if interested in historical fiction: the Brother Cadfael books are set in that period.
