Here's the best part of Hogwarts - the library. Here we all may discuss books and hold poetry competitions.
So, what have you been reading lately, and what are your favorite books of ALL TIME?

I am reading the hobbit.
3flanisntjustdessert
Favorite book of ALL time?? " The Best Nest" by Dr. Suess.
5ErisofDiscord
*giggles* Aw, poor Flan. *pats Flan's shoulders*
My favorite books of ALL TIME would have to be:
The Chronicles of Narnia, by C. S. Lewis - I refuse to pick one
The Hobbit, by J. R. R. Tolkien
The Great Divorce, by C. S. Lewis
Hamlet, by "William Shakespeare"
Wuthering Heights, by my homegirl Emily Bronte
I know I'll think of more in a minute, but that's it for now.

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green.

#11 - Thanks! I am seeing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy popping up everywhere, especially with my fellow Doctor Who fans. I think it's a sign that I should read it! :)
I think a poetry contest sounds like a capital idea. Right now I need to finish up my LT rounds, call a friend, and then go to bed, but I'll work on getting that poetry competition started tomorrow.

I was just gonna ask when we can begin the Poetry Contests in this group like we did last year. I think everyone really enjoyed participating in them. I know I did. I guess we should wait until the new Hogwarts School year offially begins.

I'll ask the Headmistress when it should start. :)

#12 Eris, you should read it! It's the only five book trilogy out there. (At least I don't think there are any others) It is full of perfectly healthy doses of randomness.
P.S. You should have a towel on hand at all times. :P
EDIT/UPDATE I am at my library when I wrote this, then someone came over to the librarian's desk with books from a book sale that I didn't previously know that the library was having. I found The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and The Restaurant at the end of the Universe (the second book)! I quickly snatched them up. I read the series before by checking them out..

i have a question: can we have free verse poetry contests that don't have to do with Hogwarts/ HP? Because I am quite good actually at writing humorous free- verse poetry.

>Eris and Silent Reader: There is an omnibus edition, The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which includes all five novels and a short story. Handy to have them all in one place.

Reading: Hold Me Closer, necromancer, The Honest Truth About Dishonesty, Seeking Peace- Chronicles of the Worst Buddhist in the World and The Angry Island: Hunting the English. A few favs: Sense and Sensibility, Lucky Jim, The Black Tower, A Countess Below Stairs, The Dark is Rising and The Daughter of Time.

I just finished reading a book i received off of here called My vacation in hell by Gene Twaronite - pretty good book only 187 pages. Kind of odd ending. I am currently reading The night circus by Erin Morgenstern. What is the Hobbit about? I'd have to say my favorite book(even though its a series - so maybe it doesn't count although it should) is the pretty little liars - this is what got me into reading.

#15 actually a trilogy is three books or movies like The Lord of The Rings Trilogy or Star Wars. A tetralogy is is four parts & a pentalogy is five parts. So The Ultimate Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy is actually an pentalogy. I own both versions of The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy on DVD. Stephen King's Mini-Series The Stand is a tetralogy because it is in four parts.

#23 -- It is part of the author's quirky sense of humor, that the five-book Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series is referred to as a trilogy. I believe Douglas Adams intended to write only three books, but succumbed to popular demand and wrote two more.
26ErisofDiscord
You're welcome! I hope you like The Hobbit. J. R. R. Tolkien's style of writing takes a little bit to get used to (for me it did, at least), but once you get going that book is extremely enjoyable.
27Catreona
>23 beatles1964: beatles1964: The definitions you give of trilogy, tetrology etc. are of course correct. The examples you give are not.
The Lord of the Rings is a single novel which, for publication reasons, was originally issued in three volumes over a span of years. It is usually still issued in three volumes, though I understand there is now a one volume version. Similarly, His Dark Materials is a novel which, because of its length, was issued in three volumes over a span of years.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a trilogy for the simple and very good reason that Douglas Adams said it was a trilogy. It is even stated to be such on the volumes I've seen. Calling it a trilogy complete in five parts is sort of a joke, but it is what Douglas wanted. An example of a five book series would be The Dark Is Rising.
>24 foggidawn: foggidawn: Indeed, at the end of his all too short life, Douglas was seriously thinking of returning to the series. He wanted to finish it, especially since Mostly Harmless, the fifth book, is so dark.
>25 xkrissio3: xkrissio3: Have fun with The Hobbit!

The Silmarillion is an epilogue to the Hobbit and the Trilogy of the Rings. Middle Earth finally fades away and the Age of Man fully begins. I found it sad, but then I wanted Middle Earth and all those in it to last forever.
29Catreona
Betty, no, you've got it backwards. The Silmarillion is the history of the Elder Days, what we would call Ancient History from the perspective of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
And The Lord of the Rings is not a trilogy. It is a novel that is conventionally published in three volumes rather than one. Please do not refer to it as a trilogy!

It's only been ** years since I read it.
31beatles1964
I'm Sorry I've always thought of it as a trilogy. Even the movies that Peter Jackson made was called The Lord of The Rings trilogy. I think a lot of people have always thoight of Tolkien's books as a trilogy. I know J.R.R. Tolkien was writing them during WWII and sending them to his son Christopher.

One can also think of The Lord of the Rings as six books, typically published in three volumes for the sake of convenience.

>32 foggidawn: foggidawn: LOL Touche
But, Beatles. really, the parallel between Jackson's trilogy of movies and the book is very imprecise indeed. Look at Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. That is one book that was released as two movies. Does that make The Deathly Hallows a duology? I think not.
The Bartimeus Trilogy is in fact a trilogy, consisting of three separate, independent novels all of which follow the same story arc. It is possible to read any one of them independently and get a complete, self-contained story. The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King on the other hand form not one story arc with distinct parts but one continuous story. It's really not hard to understand. The idea of TLOTR being a trilogy is a commonly held misconception, that's all.

Trying to find something to read. Started The Iron King then I got made with it because it's turning out to be form fitted paranormal romance. I used to like that kind of books, but for some reason it's putting me off.
I also have Diva checked out from the public library. I haven't started it yet. I like Alex Flinn's other works.
There is also Peter and the Swamp Monster. I got the first four or five free on my kindle. The plot is so-so. I can generally guess what will happen. But what makes it interesting and enjoyable are the two main characters. Peter and Dill a nine and half and almost ten boys. The author has their characters spot on. There are several hilarious spots in the book because of them.

Finished The Host and am now reading a thriller by Agatha Christie called They Came to Baghdad. The setting, Baghdad in about 1950 is very interesting. The main character is a young girl, in her early twenties at most, who is very plucky and resourceful.

>46 sarahy: sarahy: I enjoyed The Host very much, but that doesn't really answer your question. It's intriguing, fast paced - well, it takes a while to really get going, but it's interesting from the first page - action packed. There are aliens, two interlocking love triangles, some adventure, lots of danger...I love the protagonist, though some people might think she's a wimp. Personally, I find her very strong and admirable. Her brand of strength, though, is one that has never been much in vogue on this planet - nonviolence.
What it comes down to, I guess, is that you'll have to read it yourself to know. It's sort of a commitment though. Donno how many pages it is in print, but the Audible download is divided into three parts; so, it's pretty long.

I am currently reading Minerva by M.C. Beaton - pretty far from my typical reading pattern, but these regency romances were the one thing my mom would NOT let me read growing up, so when I saw it in the Kindle lending library I couldn't pass it up!
Also The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne so that my brain doesn't completely melt.

#44: I loved it, but at the end it got very confusing. I think I would be in Etrudite, but I guess that they are all supposed to be bad. It would be cool to be in Candor because you could speak your mind all the time, but Amity has a certain quiet, peacefulness to. Dauntless would be AWESOME!! but I am not a fan of danger, the thrill though, super cool!

*claps hands happily* Gladly! If you are completely unfamiliar with Doctor Who stuff, I recommend that your starting episode be either "Rose" or "The Eleventh Hour." Rose is the very first episode of the 2005 reboot (Doctor Who was taken off the air in the 80s), and although it isn't what I would call the greatest episode, it does introduce the show to new viewers. Rose features the Ninth Doctor and takes place during Series 1. This guy is the Ninth Doctor:

Then there is "The Eleventh Hour!" That one is the first episode to ever feature the Eleventh Doctor:

Yes, he is wearing a fez! Because fezes are cool. :) Anyway, I digress! Even though "The Eleventh Hour" is the first episode of Series 5, it is also a good starting point, as it shows a lot of the wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff that is used in the show.
If, however, you are familiar with some of the things in Doctor Who (such as regnerations and the TARDIS) and just want a really good episode to get into the show with, I highly recommend the episode "Blink." It is a Tenth Doctor episode (Ten is my favorite Doctor, by the way. ^_^), so here is a pic of the Tenth Doctor, just because he is so good looking:

Blink is thought to be one of the best Doctor Who episodes, and also one of the scariest. It is in Series 3 of the reboot, so if you were able to watch that one, it would be awesome.
I hope I didn't bombard you with too much information, and that I didn't overdo it on the pictures. If you have any questions, please let me know! I wish you luck in watching Doctor Who. The Whovian fan base is a pretty awesome one, I assure you, and we love seeing new people join in. :)

Oh, definitely! Series 6 is done, and the first half of Series 7 has been released. There are still quite a few episodes left to go of Series 7 that have not been released yet, including a new companion (Amy and Rory left in a blaze of glory and tears - I'm still getting over it).
I would recommend watching a lot of the Tenth Doctor, too. The Girl in the Fireplace is superb, and Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead is a must-watch before you see the last two episodes of Series 5.
A couple of other episodes that you need to see are a couple of Ninth Doctor ones - they are The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances. Trust me, you'll never be able to look at gas masks the same way again.
I'm so happy you liked The Eleventh Hour! I am definitely due for a rewatch of that episode. I hope I'm not bombarding you with recommendations, and that you enjoy your adventures in Doctor Who land. :)

Oh, no, they're not! I'm sorry I made it sound that way. The Ninth Doctor appeared with the reboot in 2005, the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) started in 2006 and ended in 2010, and Eleven is still ongoing. Before those three, of course, are the Classic Doctors, but you don't have to get into them now. Once you watch all of New Doctor Who I recommend that you check them out when you get a chance. The Fourth Doctor in particular was quite splendid. :)
If you get a chance to watch all the series in order, that would be fantastic. I never watched the series in order, so it's not necessary, but if you want to watch the Doctors chronologically, start with Series 1. There are some not-so-good episodes, but there are more good than bad, so I hope you stick with it. If you want a really good list of the new Doctor Who episodes, here's a Wikipedia list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_doctor_who_serials#Ninth_Doctor
I hope that's helpful. Please let me know what you watch next!

It is the most recent episode, and just so you know, that episode MURDERED me. My heart was smashed and I sobbed like a little girl. We won't be getting another episode till the Christmas Special on Dec 25, when the new companion will be introduced. Have you seen Asylum of the Daleks?

I know. I was so sad!! Yes, I saw asylum if the daleks. I liked that one. :) soufflé girl. Hehe sad and funny at the same time. My favorite is probably the Big Bang, simply because of the doctor's dancing. :) why? And what is your favorite?

Oooooooooh, my favorite episode? Merp. I have so many! I'll try to narrow it down. The episoces that I'll be listing are some of the best, I promise! :)
In no particular order:
1. Blink. It's just so well crafted and ingenious - that episode also frightened me, and I can never look at statues the same way again.
2. The Girl Who Waited. So, so, so, so sad. Just a beautiful testament to Amy and Rory's relationship, and it has a heartbreaking conclusion. A serious must-watch.
3. The Girl in the Fireplace. Madame de Pompadour met the Doctor, they fell in love, but of course it ended tragically. Thus my heart was broken. :(
4. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday. These were the two episodes that Rose left the Doctor, and the Cybermen and the Daleks had an epic battle. The ending is also tragic. I seem to be noticing a pattern of me liking tragic episodes!
5. Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead. Oh, River. River, River, River. :( Besides the sadness of knowing River Song's fate the storyline is brilliant, and it's one of my favorite episodes with Donna as a companion.
6. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. Gas masks now scare me. Oh, and we meet Captain Jack in this episode! :D And the Doctor dances! Hurrah!
7. The Doctor's Wife. The TARDIS is a woman. One of my favorite Eleventh Doctor episodes. I cannot say how much I adore this episode. It was one of the first episodes that I watched and it absolutelt enchanted me. Neil Gaiman, the man who wroe the episode, is a genius.
I have so many more favorites, but I would probably bore you and I fear that I have prattled on long enough. When it comes to Doctor Who I get very excited! I can't wait to hear more of your adventures in Doctor Who! ^_^

I thought soufflé girl was turned into a Dalek? Idk how that is going to work. Maybe he rescues her before that happens? What do you think?

Sorry for getting back to you so late! I had major homework deadlines, so that was taking up far too much of my time. I'm so happy to finally relax. :)
We do know that Oswin will be coming back in an episode set in the Victorian times, and she has been seen to be wearing very Victorian dress. There are so many theories about how Oswin is going to come back, and I have concocted about five. In Doctor Who it could be anything though!
1. She is a Time Lord, and regenerated after the Asylum exploded. Not very likely though, as much as I would love for another Time Lord to come around.
2. Maybe the Doctor remembered her like Amy did for Rory, bringing Oswin back as an Auton. Also not likely, but hey, who knows what will happen?
3. Oswin was in a Teselecta. This plays a big part in Series 6, which I'm not sure if you've watched yet, so I'll not be spoilery, just in case.
4. The cracks in time swallowed her up just as she was about to be exploded, and they sent her back in time to the Victorian age. I didn't come up with this theory - a fellow Whovian on Goodreads did. Goodreads is a really neat site for meeting fellow Whovians! :D
5. The Doctor meets Oswin at an earlier point in her timeline.
6. The character in the Christmas Special is a completely different person than Oswin Oswald, only played by the same actress. This has happened before in Doctor Who, but I would be very bummed out if that was the solution. I don't think it will be, though. Steven Moffat, the show's producer and main writer, is a fiendlishly clever person, and I don't think he would cop out like that.
There! I just rambled on again. Sorry! I hope some of that made sense. What episodes have you recently watched, Moemoa? Do you have a favorite Doctor and companion?

I have only seen Matt smith because that is all that is on my on demand. :p I started with the 11th hour and went straight through… or so I thought. Idk what a teselecta is so maybe I skipped some. But I love him and I especially love rory. I have recently ordered the first season (the 9th doctor) from my library so I'm going to start from the beginning. Do you like Amy and Rory? What do you think is going to happen when the doctor runs out of regenerations?

I love Amy and Rory. They are one of my favorite Doctor Who couples, and just one of my favorite fictional couples evah. My favorite companion is Rose, because she was the first companion I really got to know, but I love all the companions. They each bring something new to how we see the Doctor.
As for the regeneration question, I am satisfied with Steven Moffat's answer. He just said that if the limited regeneration question ever becomes an issue he would "make something up" to keep the show from ending. I don't think it'll be a problem. It will probably either a) never come up, or b) the Doctor will steal the Master's regenerations, or something. Ohhhh, you have to meet the Master! He comes along in Series 3.
Hope you love the Ninth Doctor! He was only around for one year, but I think he is seriously underrated as a Doctor. His confrontations with the Daleks were some of the best of any of the Doctors. And yay, with the first series you get to meet Rose! :D :D :D I hope you like her. She and Sarah Jane Smith (who was a companion for the Third and Fourth Doctor, and for some of the Fifth and Tenth) are the most popular companions.

I have requested the series that starts with "The Eleventh Hour" from the library, since someone said that was a good place to start . . . so I imagine I'll be joining all of you in Doctor Who fandom soon. ;-)

YES! Oh, Foggi, I hope you like the show, I really do! Doctor Who is something that has brought me and millions others such joy and happiness. Plus, you get in on so many awesome jokes and suddenly everything in your life reminds you of Doctor Who. At least, that's what happened to me...

I know that this is VERY off subject and not harry Potter related, but I am happy to announce that Minnesota choice to vote " NO" on limiting the freedom to marry!!! Happycakes!!
