September Fantasy Thread - NO SPOILERS - Dirk Gently's

The full title is Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams. I was afraid it would be cut off in the title!

I have no idea what to expect with this book. I haven't heard much about it.

It is quite possibly my favorite Douglas Adams book, but it has been a long time since I read it, so all I have left are the memories of the feeling, if that makes any sense.

The beginning is very very odd. SO much so that I think it is worth mentioning just how odd it is, in order to prepare you for it's oddness. And of course encourage all to perservere with it, because it does all make sense in the end. Well about as much sense as DNA ever makes, but the somewhat disperate threads all tie together in a gradiose knot.

It may also be, in places, somewhat UK centric in outlook - please ask and I (or the other UK based GDers) can attempt to explain what on earth he's going on about.

I read it a couple of months ago, with high expectations as a result of postings here. The cultural and literary aspects were not a problem for me. However, in the end I found it very flat. It was just like..."So?" To me it didn't seem to reward the investment.

I tried this book eons ago and couldn't get into it but I've been thinking of giving it another go for a while now so I'm going to try and join in. I was hoping to get the audiobook from the library but they only have an abridged version so paper copy it'll be.

I caught some of the TV show the other day and just didn't do it for me, but both the DirK Gently books remain old favourite friends (and after 20 odd years since first reading them I still don't like street lights going our when I walk/drive underneath them).
