A sci-fi short story about a medical ring and the aid workers who are doing their best to make medical technologies available to 3rd world. There's another guy, a newcomer who has this ring that monitors his health. The aid workers need it to do some analysis for a (a new drug? vaccine? treatment?) but it's expensive, their budget can't pay for it. He agrees to help them, of course. Except they surprise him by staging a highway robbery and cutting his finger off--because the ring's monitoring it the whole time and if they used anesthesia and sound medical practices, his insurance company would know it and he won't get a new one.

Edit: FOUND

Yeyuka is definitely the story I was thinking of, and I read it in Not the Only Planet a collection of science fiction stories about travel.
