I myself don't have much interest in any politician's personal religious beliefs - unless she or he were a scientologist or something. E.g. though I am an atheist I have no problem with Obama being a christian and I hope he wins. However, it seems a large per cent of the American people are not as open-minded as I am - if the Gallop poll means anything at all. To wit:

Eighteen per cent of Americans say they would not vote for a mormon for President. OK. Doesn't sound good for Willard. But another forty per cent of Americans at this point in time do not know Rmoney is a mormon. Well, why would not a similar per cent of those people also not vote for Willard once they find out he's mormon? And why would they not find out in the next few months?
So, the total number who would not vote for a mormon for President would be more like 25 or 30 per cent.
Well, liberals and moderates and independents tend to be more, uh, liberal about these things than conservative republicans, so a large part of that 25 to 30 per cent will be your usually reliable republican voters. It looks to me Willard's magic underwear better start working overtime if he is to start winning hearts and minds to his cause.
(BTW, what IS his cause - besides lowering taxes on millionaires/billionaires, privatizing and thus destroying Social Security, and turning Medicaid into a coupon program for the hoi polloi?)

another forty per cent
That's not what the survey found. "Another" is your word. You're assuming that there is no overlap between the 18% and the 40%. For all we can tell from the article, the 18% are all within that 40% (unlikely, of course, but there's nothing to suggest otherwise).
So, the total number who would not vote for a mormon for President would be more like 25 or 30 per cent.
That doesn't follow.

I did miss that. You are correct, madam.
So the best Willard might be doing is: 18 per cent have ruled him out because he's mormon. The per cent could be higher - not determined at this time.
I do get confused on percentages sometimes. However, I am a whiz at the Monte Hall three door brain-teaser.
