Banned Books Readathing 2012??

Hi folks . . . Anyone interested in a ReadaThing during Banned Books Week (September 30, 2012 - October 6, 2012)?

P.S. Not sure if/how countries other than the US do "Banned Books Week", but please post about how to make this open enough for all. There are certainly lists out there of books banned in countries around the world. And, if you are lucky enough to live somewhere where books are not banned, you are welcome to read some of ours and comment on how absurd it seems to the outside world.

P.P.S. If any of you are in other groups who regularly do Banned Books Challenges, please cross post and/or let me know if one is already planned.

Sure, why not. I love banned books.

(p.s.: I'm Dutch - can't speak for other countries but "Banned Books Week" as such is totally alien for me. But that doesn't mean I don't understand about banned books. And there are so many of them).

Sounds interesting. I'm only a little bit helpless in finding such books. I can't really remember which books have been banned during the last 20 years here in Switzerland and of other countries I've got no ideas. So I would need help.

I'm in. I'm Portuguese, so we don't have a "Banned Books Week" (fortunately) but we lived under a dictatorship for almost 50 years (not me, I was born in democracy) and censorship was a very real thing.

I was planning to read "Lord of the Flies" this Fall so I'll read it that week.

Thanks Lucinda for the wikipedia link. During the last 35 years I've read a lot books from this list and while time is precious I won't re-read them. But luckily I've found one, which my local library can provide me.

So, I'll be in. I'll read The Naked and the Dead by Norman Mailer but in German. Because it has got 860 pages and I have to work during this week, I'll give the reading a start and probably will finish it the proximate week, so my post about the book will be later than most of the others.

Doesn't appear to be enough interest to organize a full-fledged ReadaThing, but I'll be reading banned/challenged books and posting about them that week and hope others will do the same.

I'll be reading your posts, but not sure I'll hunt up a banned book to read. Most of the ones in such lists that I'm interested in I've already read, and I NEED to concentrate on new (-to-me) books and shrink my surplus. But I'll check the lists and see if I have any banned books among my TBRs...

Today I read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie.

Next will be either Reading Lolita in Tehran, To Kill a Mockingbird, or I might reread The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. It seems very relevant right now.
