I get why most of the CKs are not sortable, but this should just be a date. Why can't this be sorted? It would be interesting to see what books were published during similar eras (I NEVER would have guessed that Les Mis came just after Silas Marner - The entire time I was reading Silas Marner, I thought it had been inspired by Les Mis).

No, it's still complicated. Original publication date in different countries/languages are often added - which is also interesting and useful information, but complicates searching.

I feel like that should go under the CK for the edition's publication date, otherwise there should just be "original publication date" for every teeny tiny alteration made (which is obviously a facetious statement).
"Original" means first, so it should only be the first publication.

Ya'd think. Actually, I agree with you - but I've seen comments about other forms of OPD (trying hard to come up with any, but... Magazine publication of a story before it's collected into book form?).

I would consider serial publications (published in magazines first) as the original publication. The original book form would be an "edition" in my opinion.

I came here to post about exactly this; nearly eight years later, but CK:OPD is not sortable sadly.

I'd like to create a virtual bookshelf on LibraryThing of all the books I plan to read (adding additional books as I discover them). However, I do not see an easy way to organize the books chronologically by Original Publication Date (I see that is a field heading one can add but it isn't sortable).
Would it be possible for you to set OPD as a sortable field?
Thank you for your attention to this request.
