Title is not "frog prince" or other obvious.
The young princess/girl drops a crystal ball down the well at the beginning (I guess that's standard for this tale).
Possibly written by a woman.
More young adult than children's book (?).
There's an unwanted suitor, not the frog (?).
I may be confusing a couple different versions. I read it as early as the 1990s.
In case I'm only remembering the original tale, Are there any versions written for older readers, possibly with spunky/independent heroines? Along the lines of Dennis L. McKiernan, or even Juliet Marillier's Wildwood Dancing.

One of the stories in Robin McKinley's The Door in the Hedge is a retelling of The Frog Prince. That's the one I'm most familiar with, but there are others. The tag frog prince will list some titles with that theme.

Tanith Lee has written two retellings of the Frog Prince, as far as I know. One is "The Princess and her Future", which first appeared in Red as blood. Plot summary:
Jarasmi, the Ruler's daughter, receives a ball of golden glass that will reveal her future if she casts it on the ground and breaks it. This she does, with unexpected results.
The other is called "Kiss Kiss", and appeared in Datlow and Winding's (eds) Silver Birch, Blood Moon. Plot summary:
The kiss of a princess changes a frog into a prince, but brings other changes as well.
The latter story is about how kind the enchanted prince is as a frog, and the princess's disillusionment with how domineering and unkind he becomes once he's turned back.
If these are not it, you might want to check out the Snow White, Red Blood series. It's a series of short story collections, all of which are retold fairy tales.

I can suggest two further places to look. One is the group Fairy Tales Retold -
http://www.librarything.com/groups/fairytalesretold
And the website http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/ does an incredible job of cataloging new versions of many many fairy tales.

@SylviaC, Door in the Hedge is now on my to-re-read list. :)
@Petroglyph, Tanith Lee is an author I've been meaning to check out for ages! I'm very intrigued by the unkind frog-(re)turned-prince.
@2wonderY I've been on surlalune briefly, it seems an excellent source - one I bookmarked!
Thanks, all! These all look like great ideas/sources. Currently re-reading Wildwood Dancing to feed the craving for frog prince stories and fairy tales.

I know it's not what you're looking for because it was just published earlier this year, but since you said you're looking for other versions of the tale as well, Enchanted by Alethea Kontis is a recently published book that uses the frog prince as it's starting point.
