read in early 90's in elementary school; I don't remember any character names, but I do remember some story points:
- main protaganist was a young girl growing up in the early 1900's who got into trouble a lot
- at one point the phone in the house rang, but it was for another party (at the time, each house had it's own ring, but you could listen in on conversations that were taking place between two different homes) however she listened in and while the women were gossiping, she said something that made them stop and then try to figure out who was listening in on their conversation
- she and some of her siblings went on the roof of the house while their parents were gone, thinking that as soon as they saw their parents driving home, they could get off the roof and no one know, but the way the road was situated, the parents could see them on the roof before the kids saw their parents
- a beloved animal died, i'm almost positive it was a horse

I'm pretty sure this was a coming of age book, trying to help the girl mature through her experiences.

Thanks anyone for your help!

Perhaps "Maudie in the Middle" by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor?
