I'm looking for a book I would have read it on the early or mid 2000's, I think it was published in the late 1990's or early 2000's.

A little girl was kidnapped from Mexico (I believe, I remember the man who took her was down there and happened to see her and took her - it may have been one of the southwest states) and he brought her to live with him, in New England if I'm remembering correctly. She wasn't allowed to go anywhere but in the backyard which had a locked fence (the front door was also always locked). She had a garden in the backyard which she tended to. She lived in the basement, chained up and possibly moved to another room after she had been there for a while.

He was about to take her as a wife (I remember he got her a dress) when she stabbed him with a knife she took after she made dinner one night. I think she called 911. There was a police officer, I don't remember his name - it may have been Malcolm, who helped her sort out her life and who she was before. There was a trial for the murder and I think she was found not guilty.

I'm pretty sure it was written by a woman. It's not a romance novel, it's more of a "light" psychological thriller. It chronicles her life since the murder and her past comes up and what happened.

Thanks for helping!

Found it after doing a search on Google books! It's called the House of Forgetting.

The House of Forgetting by Benjamin Alire Saenz

Amazing how often writing down the details here lets you find the book that you've been searching for for years...it's happened to me twice, now.
