I stole this from my mom's romance novel collection when she wasn't looking when I was young. i'm guessing it was in the late 90s, and was my first romance novel and I LOVED it. It was set in New Orleans (I think, but it could have been Charleston or Savannah I suppose). I don't remember the original set up, but the heroine wants to be an actress. She meets a wealthy man who takes her into his home, sort of like a mistress, but he never touches her. I thought this may be a quadroon ball situation, but I may not have known what that was at the time I was reading it. Google hasn't turned anything up with that search, however.

The heroine had prophetic dreams about the man she will fall in love with. She sees a portrait in this wealthy man's home and identifies him as the man she's been dreaming of. This portrait is of her benefactor's brother. He ends up being handsome but cruel and she ends up having an affair with him (meaning the brother). He thinks she is a common prostitute and is shocked when she ends up being a virgin the first time they have sex. Anyway, he treats her terribly and she ends up leaving that home and becomes a successful actress. Ultimately she falls in love with her director (?) or the man that runs the stage company and realizes that he was the man of her dreams/visions all along.

I forget so many of the details since it was so long ago and I was so young (and I was reading it FAST so I didn't get caught!) but I really want to reread it. I don't remember the character's names or the title, but for some reason I'm thinking the kinder brother was Julian and Colin was the evil brother. Don't remember the 'hero's' name. I remember thinking the novel was uneven since so much of the novel was spent on the bad relationship rather than the person she had her happily-ever-after with.

Possibly They Call Her Dana? My memories of it are kind of fuzzy, but it's set in New Orleans, and the heroine loved a handsome man who was cruel to her before meeting her true love. There was a prophesy element about the heroine loving three or four men in her life, but she didn't love them all sexually.

This may be it! It's hard to find a book description complete with full plot and characters on Google since the book is out of print. But considering the hours I've spent looking for this title I guess I can invest a few looking for more information. Thanks so much!

One of the reviews on Amazon states the heroine is an actress.

Just as an update, I bought a used copy, and the book I was looking for is indeed They Call Her Dana.
