We read this author (or had him read to us) in elementary school, so early eighties. The illustrations were rather darkly coloured, almost like oil paintings. I think the author had more than one book, they had a sort of inner city setting.

And holy doodle! Ezra Jack Keats also wrote John Henry: An American Legend, another half-forgotten-yet-haunting book from childhood. My friend had it and the guy DIED at the end, it was so messed up to a six(?) year old.
