So read this book maybe 20 years ago. It was based in the far future, many planets colonized but with help of other aliens.
The main characters was a girl maybe 18ish who had lost her parents and had strong mental talents.
The human race was still trying to figure out how to travel faster then light (every race had to discover it for themselves or something).
I think the cover was a picture of her surfing the solar winds or something.

Any help is appreciated.

I was surprised how quickly I found it actually, plus happened to use the correct keywords first time. Writing out a query does help with clarifying search terms, year range, etc. Enjoy re-reading!
