Half-remembered illustrated children's book.
All I remember is the plot revolved around a boy going on a journey and trading items. At one point he traded a globe-shaped pencil sharpener to a man in a hot air balloon (who was distressed at the hole in the north pole). In the end he trades something to a girl for forget-me-not flowers. If i remember correctly the last page of the book was an illustration of the boy looking out his window.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, this has been driving me crazy for a while.

I think this might be a book by Sven Nordqvist - I think I remember the pencil sharpener - but I'm not sure which it would be. Maybe Willie in the big world?
