I can't believe it's February already!
The first book I'll start this month is Raven Boys by Maggie Stievater.

I'm reading Last Year's Jesus, a book of short stories set in Detroit, by Ellen Slezak which I'm really enjoying. I'm starting to like Infinite Jest, mainly because we've been spending so much time together and I've just begun The Collector by John Fowles for the Fowles in February group read.
3Yells
I just started Faceless Killers by Mankell and in the middle of Mammoth Cheese by Holman.
4psutto
Still reading snow crash

Reading an ER book A Cast of Stones. I've barely begun Zoo City on my tablet, but the ER book is very good so I'm drawn to that at the moment.

I've started The Beach at Galle Road that I received through the ER program.

I started reading The Spy Who Came in From the Cold today on my lunch break as I couldn't wait until I got home. I love what I've read of it so far - I'm so excited for February.

Rereading Spinward Fringe Awakening. Really enjoying it.
10DeltaQueen50
I'm starting the month with Bitterblue the third volume in Kristin Cashore's fantasy trilogy. I have also started A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, a memoir of a boy forced to fight in the war in Sierra Leone during the 1990's.
11japaul22
Anna Karenina and Gone Girl. They make quite a contrast!!!
12dudes22
I'm continuing with Gone Girl although I really dislike all the characters so far. I've been told things change at the "black" page ( start of part 2, I think) and I'm about 50 pages away. But I can't imagine the characters will become likeable. Going to post Jan summary later tonight.

I'm continuing a January read, Moll Flanders - interesting and not sure how I feel about it, and listening to Naked Lunch - interesting and not sure how I feel about it and think I will still feel that way when I'm done on this one.

Today I started a short story collection called The Penguin Book of Gaslight Crime, which is pretty good so far. I also really like the cover.

I'm reading the fascinating memoir, Eating Dirt by Charlotte Gill. She was a tree planter for 20 years--a profession that has always intrigued me.

I'm trying to finish up a couple of books I started in January - The Farming of Bones by Edwidge Danticat and Eighty Days by Matthew Goodman.

I'm finishing January leftovers: Death Without Company and The Hard Way Lee Child.

I am still reading 2 from January - Gravity's Rainbow (a trip and a half) and Plain Tales from the Hills (some comfort reading.
I have a few books I know I'd like to read this month - Confederacy of Dunces is the readalong in the 1001 group here; the last 2 2012 World Book Night Books I have yet to read: The Vanishing of Esme Lennox and Touching the Void; possibly Jazz and of course some that have been hanging around my house for toooo long.

>1 mamzel:, I read The Raven Boys last month and thought it was a bit cliched, but fun. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
I'm currently reading The Frozen Thames (slowly, since the stories all kind of run together), You Will See Fire: A Search for Justice in Kenya, and The Midnight Folk - a children's fantasy where the evil governess really is a witch.

#19 Hi xuesheng, the Bumpers book is very good. It is truly a memoir rather than an autobiography, he tells one story after another beginning with his early childhood during the 1930s. Fort Smith is my hometown so I live about 25 miles from Charleston, his hometown, so I'm very familiar with the locales that he mentions. Norman Mailer is quoted on the cover and says it very well: "How agreeable to read a serious politician's memoir and find it as full of wit, bite, scorn, compassion, and insight as Dale Bumpers himself."
28dudes22
I've finished Gone Girl and am starting one of my award books for this month - The Scarlet Thread.

Finishing up a book I started in January, The Game by A.S. Byatt. Next I think I'll start on a book I got from my mom, The Red Queen by Margaret Drabble.
30Nickelini
#29 - I heard so many "meh" comments about The Red Queen that I expected to read a few pages and through it in the box for the charity shop. What a nice surprise--I liked it a lot. And promptly went out and bought an armful of other Margaret Drabble books. I hope you like it as much as I did.

I am, once again, starting Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace; I think the length of it intimidates me!

Still working on Outlander, which can be somewhat silly, but I'm skimming the bosom-heaving parts, and the rest is quite entertaining. Also still working on The Amulet of Samarkand, which I'm liking quite a lot - putting the rest of the series on the wishlist.

I've finished a few short reads already, The House on the Borderland, The Newton Letter, and Quicksand.

I'm finishing Pulse by Julian Barnes. Sadly, no snow here, so no good excuse to hibernate for the weekend. Maybe I'll do it anyway as a sign of solidarity with those who are...

>cookie - hubby went out and moved some of it already, and we're going to clear again after supper. Like Booklizard, we've had maybe 3-4 inches so far. the big worry is heavy snow causing branches to come down and take utility lines out. We've got a generator if we need it.

I can't really imagine what is like to deal with snow like you guys have to. The last time I had snow that settled in my neighbourhood was back during "The Big Snow" of 1986. On that day I built my first ever snowman and had my first ever snowball fight. I was 28 years old at the time. The snow lasted less than a day before it melted.
Some of the higher suburbs in Hobart (i.e. above about 400 meters) do get snow on a regular basis but I have never lived in those suburbs.

We've had quite a bit - maybe around 12-15 inches (my calculations say that's about 30 cms?) so far although its still lightly snowing. And areas a little north of us got up to 2 feet. The weather guy is saying it could still snow in parts of RI at the rate of 3-4 inches an hour for a while yet. The shape of RI and the bay going up inside can cause wild variations in snow accumulation. I guess the official totals for RI are 18-24 inches.
71BookLizard
When I went to bed 6 hours ago, I had 6-8 inches on the hood of my car and the snow on the ground was up to the bottom of the car door. This morning, the hood is clear but the snow on the groud is halfway up the door. A few more hours to go and they're saying we could get 2-4 more inches. I'm hoping the wind changes direction as the storm leaves and the snow blows somewhere else!

You know the snow storm is bad when you have to shovel UNDER your car to get out of your parking spot. A neighbor helped push my car out of my spot. The contractors that are supposed to plow our parking spots haven't been around today. I left my car illegally parked near the dumpster in hopes that they would plow my spot. They didn't so I just had to go shovel some more to get my car BACK IN my spot.

I am closing out the month with a police procedural, Cold Light by John Harvey and a ghost story, Dark Matter by Michelle Paver.

I've finished an ER and Cat book The Lost Art of Mixing and have started The Hunt by Jan Neuharth and also The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.

After a string of rather quick reads, I'm sinking my teeth into something a little more bulky: The half-made world by Felix Gilman.

>137 GingerbreadMan: - I really enjoyed thunderer and plan to do a re-read of thunderer followed by first read gears of the city later this year so will be interested in what you think of this one

I've finished The Hunt, which I didn't find that good, and am going to start The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest while I also continue with The Forgotten Garden.

I started Neverwhere on the bus this morning and am really enjoying it. However, it sustained a bit of water damage on my long, snow-ridden commute home from work (even my very waterproof bag has chinks in its armour) so I have to dry it out. Grumble.

I am finishing the month with This earth of mankind, the first in the Buru Quartet set in Indonesia. Really liking it so far, getting to know the characters and the country a century ago.

I've finished George Saunders' excellent book of short stories, Tenth of December and am currently reading The Liars' Club, a memoir by Mary Karr that is reading like a cross between The Glass Castle and Let's Pretend This Never Happened. I'm also continuing with Seven Days in the Art World by Sarah Thornton and A Quiet Belief in Angels by R.J. Ellory.

>142 RidgewayGirl: Really looking forward to your review on Saunders!

Yesterday, I finished Maisie Dobbs, which was okay, and Soulless, which was a hilarious steampunk adventure.

I just finished To Hell and Back and need to start something new. I'll probably start Carpe Jugulum from the library.

Gritted my teeth and finished Smilla's Sense of Snow last night. Working on The Robber Bride and The Monk, but probably won't be finishing either of those in February.

@ 141 -- How funny! I've read The Mute's Soliloquy, which is Toer's memoir. It's definitely interesting for someone like me, who knows next to nothing about Indonesia!
I'm reading Lessons in French by Hilary Reyl, my January ER win. I'm guessing I won't finish it this month, though!

I've started The Complaints, also working on Watching the Dark before it has to go back to the library.

I've just finished The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. Usually on vacation, I have a paper and an electronic book going at the same time. I think I'll start Sunday List of Dreams by Kris Radish for my next paper book and maybe the last Stieg Larsson book The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest for my next electronic one.

Managed to squeak in The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt) which I thoroughly enjoyed until the very end. I did not like the end.

>138 psutto: Very very promising so far. A very original world, an interesting cast and the potential of a nail-biting plot. The pages fly by.

Dudes - we read The Forgotten Garden for book group. I really enjoyed it.
I'm reading Aspirin: The Remarkable Story. Interesting - there was a chapter about influenza of 1918 and then we watched Downton Abbey. Funny when books overlap the rest of your life.
