I picked this novel up in a used book store in Texas back in the 90s or so but can't recall the title or author.
It is standalone fiction novel for adults, fairly thick paperback. I think that the cover was black/dark with a woman's face on the front.
The main female character had an initial sexual encounter at a relatively young age with a soldier near a pier/dock/boat, and decided that sex was what came naturally to her. She was (willingly?) sold into a training facility with other attractive girls that groomed them for placement in court, and then entered the palace and began learning politics, assembling an entourage of female friends and confidantes, etc. She ended up getting pregnant, delivering a son, and leaving the royal/palace life to be with her husband and son in a small cottage near a river at the end of the book. She kisses her entourage farewell in a boat as she gets out to begin her new life. I believe her name may have started with a Y and one of the male names was something like Zycarion/Zemarion.

The plot makes me think of Green, although it's not a perfect match and much to recent.
The heroine had been taken as a child to training facility near to /connected with the palace, where she was trained (with others) as a concubine/assassin. She eventually breaks with the facility to go her own way. She eventually has a son by a brief soldier lover, but I think that might happen in the sequel novel.

Interesting - I've always loved Watership Down, but somehow I've totally missed the fact that Adams wrote epic human fantasy as well. TBR list gets bigger again!
