MARCH ROOT - Progress thread

1cyderry
Edited: Mar 5, 2013, 11:33 am

The second month of our 2013 challenge is over and we are continuing to do great!

So, let's keep these tickers (password ROOT) moving with everyone adding their progress to the comprehensive goal for all of us. We need to have a total of 1,332 by the end of March to stay on track. We can do it!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ticker thread (http://www.librarything.com/topic/148710) is a
great help in crunching the end of month numbers so if you haven't already
posted your ticker there, please do! if there is a * by your name , it indicates there is a ticker on your thread but not on the ticker thread and a & indicates no ticker. This just tells me where I need to go to get the numbers that are not on the ticker thread. I try to keep up on the personal threads during the month, so having to revisit to gather numbers can be a bit time consuming if the system is slow. Any help is appreciated. So if you have a ticker made already , please think about copying the HTML to the ticker thread.
Thanks for your help!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOKLOVERS - get back out there and read those BOOKS!

I do think, Cheli, that having a ticker only thread is so much easier than having to add it to the monthly thread every month (lazy me). That was a good idea.

Birds - don't pressure yourself. The reason I put the percentages down is so that those with small goals can feel that they are right up there with those with large goals. If you're in the pack with a bunch of readers, you're doing fine!

>6 dudes22::
dudes22; I hope you are enjoying your Radish. She is good for a hoot!~!

I am still on the same ROOTS I have been on for a week or two. The Children's Book (fairly large @ nearly 896 pages), and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. But I've been ill and I tend to only read at night so I'm not letting my speed bum me out. I will catch up later. Loving the Byatt and finding the Bronte just okay. It reminds me of a poor du Maurier but interesting enough to finish.

I finally finished a book... first one since Jan I do believe. The Worst Hard Time by Timpthy Egan. Now I am onto The Colony by John Tayman, about the lepers exiled to Molokai. I expect this may be a hard read for me, small dense type, so I may break my rules and start a second book with larger type so when my eyes get tired I can keep reading.

I've gotten 2 read this month, to bring my total to 12 so far this year. But, I'm working on quite a few of my own books this month (instead of just library books like last month - oops), so I'm hoping that I can get another 8 finished before April!

47ipsoivan
Mar 11, 2013, 7:24 pm

I wonder if I am doing (suffering from?) something that is common to those who are new to ROOT? I began in January, full of vim to finish a bunch of unread books, but now find myself rereading early books in a series to get the most out of the still-unread later books.

I'm currently rereading (with great pleasure) Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson, to be followed by The Confusion, so that I can finish the cycle with a ROOT, The System of the World. They are all long, and although I am chomping to read more ROOTS, I am enjoying the rereading -- but simultaneously longing to feel the uplift of having read a lot of unread books. Any thoughts?

48fuzzi
Mar 11, 2013, 8:57 pm

I feel better now, @ipsoivan. I found a copy of book #2 in a series, one I'd never read before, but don't want to read it until I reread book #1!

50connie53
Mar 12, 2013, 4:39 am

I feel the same but i'm fighting it with succes. I think I'm fairly good in reading a # 5 or 7 without rereading the previous books. My memory is good enough.

51Robertgreaves
Mar 12, 2013, 7:35 am

I used to re-read the earlier books in a series before I read the one that happened to be in my TBR pile but then I realised that meant reading the earliest ones a dozen times or more, so now I've decided only to read earlier ones when I've got the whole series.

52alphaorder
Mar 12, 2013, 8:24 am

I knew it would happen. Started out strong in January, but then I can't help myself - I buy and read new books. I did go 30 days earlier in the year without purchasing a book. Maybe it is time to do it again...

Eggs come from chickens
But have no legs under 'em.

Mar 14, 2013, 9:07 am

>51 Robertgreaves: Ha! In January, I read the first in another series for the third time, the second and third for a second time, all so that I could enjoy the fourth. Unlike connie I don't have a good enough memory, especially when it comes to Stephenson's Baroque Cycle. Even with my current rereading, I have to think hard about some of the characters who appear less often -- too many characters, too many changes of name as their efforts are rewarded with titles and so on. I have a tenuous hold on all this, but I'm enjoying the series immensely (again).

63Booksloth
Mar 15, 2013, 7:43 am

I abandoned . . . And Ladies of the Club in favour of In One Person. While takig on board all the goods things I've hear about those ladies I think this one's been on Mount TBR for far too lonf now and it just doesn't appeal so it's going in the charity bag and counting as a ROOT. Feels like a bit of a cheat but it's time to acknowledge that I'm just never going to read it. I've added it to the tickers.

64fuzzi
Edited: Mar 15, 2013, 12:44 pm

I'm not doing well on ROOT books this month: I have just finished a reread of a non-ROOT book, The Running Foxes, and then will read the sequel, Lakeland Vet which is new to me.

And THEN, time permitting, I'll reread "Rex" by the same author. Since it is a reread, I won't count it as a ROOT.

Sorry, all...my ROOT choices just aren't appealing to me right now. :(

@Booksloth, it's OFF your shelves, so that's not a cheat. You tried, and why waste time reading something that you aren't enjoying?

Another one off the shelf for me--Jane and Prudence by Barbara Pym. Been hanging around here since 2011--if only I'd known how good it was! Still have several more Pym novels on my ROOT shelf, which I'm looking forward to.

Another ROOT for me: The Cater Street Hangman by Anne Perry. This is really a re-read but read so long ago I'd forgotten most of the details, not to mention conflated much of it with a movie version I saw on A&E I think. The movie had changed some of the action around considerably, IIRC.

Anyway, updating all tickers

70alphaorder
Mar 16, 2013, 8:39 am

I have decided to purge, purge, purge.

I am visiting all of my shelves. Here are my criteria for KEEPING a book, otherwise, out it goes:
1. I have never read the book, but it still sounds interesting enough to me that might do so in the future
2. The book meant a lot to me when I read it and I want to remember that particular reading experience
3. It is signed by the author or is some other collectible (I have some unsigned special editions from by bookselling career).

I have only done one small shelf so far, but 6 books went off it! I am not counting these as ROOTs however, because I did not read them this year.

Still it feels good. And I will bring the boxes of purged books to Half Price. I hope I can get enough money to purchase a few of the 258 books on my wish list.

I'm finding it slow going this month having only read 4 roots so far. I've been quite taken with library books this month. Two more library books to finish and then I hope to spend the rest of the month on Roots.

83fuzzi
Mar 19, 2013, 9:57 am

I've been busy with shiny 'new to me' books, and library books, too.

Bad, bad, bad fuzzi.

I have two ROOTs with me today (I'm proctoring an exam, and can't do much except sit online or read) and plan to at least attempt to read one of them. I am determined to get at least one more ROOT finished this month...

84majkia
Mar 19, 2013, 11:19 am

I've finished my 25th ROOT for the year, Doctor Thorne. As usual, an excellent Trollope. I can feel myself getting seduced by the new and shiny though, so I'm glad I planned to front load my challenge, so I won't feel so bad now that I'm likely to go off the rails, so to speak!

Am updating all tickers.

> Hi Jean, I am finding the same. Pleased I had an early raid on the shelves as now that the prizes are being announced, I am becoming a little sidetracked by the new and shiny and library books.

This is a good month for ROOT reading for me -- three more, for a total of 6 so far this month, 15 for the year! A Haunting at Hensley Hall, Time for God, and Killer Show: The Station Nightclub Fire. The book about the fire was very well-written. Updating tickers.

88fuzzi
Mar 19, 2013, 8:19 pm

I'm going to remove All Quiet on the Western Front from my shelves: it just doesn't interest me at this time! I don't have a good reason to force myself to read it when I don't want to.

89Samantha_kathy
Mar 20, 2013, 12:32 pm

I'm culling my TBR stack and pulling ROOTS I am never going to read. Therefore, I've said goodbye to two fantasy trilogies I am never going to read, and as such I've pulled 6 ROOTS. And that without reading a word :D.

I've also just finished reading a ROOT, Dissolution, and will write a review for that one later today. I loved it and am glad I finally read it.

And another ROOT removed, partly read:

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

I just couldn't get into the story. :(

That makes 2 ROOTs completed this month, for a total of 11 this year.

Two ROOTs for me this month, although I did not finish either one.

If I made a good faith effort to read my ROOT book, and it's "off my shelf", then it qualifies as a completed ROOT, "in my opinion". :)

I did not and will not finish any ROOTs (again) for this month. So, my ticker remains at 3 ROOTs read for 2013 and hope to get a grip on my reading habit next month.
Unfortunately I've borrowed some books by colleagues that I need to finish and give back. Additionally, I'm in no right mood to read anything currently. I hope that'll change again soon. Let's hope the Easter break brings some relaxed time.

Hello Everyone! For most of this week, my cable company has been experiencing a higher number of outages than usual around the area which means that my Internet connection has been intermittent and I never know how long I have Internet access for a given day! :) It's not been too bad, I guess, but it is starting to get really annoying! :)

Anyway, I'm currently reading The Brontes: Wild Genius on the Moors, the Story of Three Sisters by Juliet Barker, which at 1,184 pages is definitely going to be my last ROOT for March. It is an ebook that Mareena bought for me back in January and so far, I've read 28% of the book - which means I've read approximately 331 pages, I think.

In keeping with the group theme, here are my March Totals:

Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 2
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 4
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 1
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 7
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 9

I've been in one of those dreaded reading fogs this month, I've had a hard time deciding on what I wanted to read and consequently I've got 5 books going which is something I don't usually do and I keep casually drifting from one to the other reading a bit here and a bit there instead of finishing something!

Completed 2 ROOTS for March.

A big cheer for all!

I've read an enormous amount this month, but not technically ROOTS. One 1000 pager, and about half of another, both parts of a series that I'm rereading so that I can do full justice to the last in the series, another very long one that will be a ROOT. I'm enjoying every bit of this, but feeling somewhat guilty!

Before I started these, I read one short ROOT, and updated all tickers.

Sorry work got too intense, so I had to check out for a few weeks. Fortunately I left what became the job from hell in the middle of March and my reading picked up immediately. I need to catch up with myself and am reading too many e-books, but have finished off a few more qualifying books.
