I'm looking for a trio of autobiographical books by an author whose first name might be Kate. The first volume in the trio focuses on her childhood in Brooklyn. She was from a Jewish family and lived with her brother and parents. They were kind of poor. This was maybe after World War I.
She ended up going to Hunter College and getting involved with a lot of theater people and writers. She moves out of her family's house because of arguments with her father and lives with a myriad of odd people.
She grew up to marry a man with some sort of congenital disease that caused him to go deaf and finally die at a young age. Their little girl inherited the disease and died at about age 20.
Does this sound familiar to anyone at all?
Thanks!
Edit: It seems to me her name may not have been Kate after all.

Maybe the Kate Simon books: Bronx Primitive, et al? I Googled "jewish woman deaf husband autobiography" and found this link. The details match. I've not read them, but they sound very interesting. It sounds like she led an amazing life.
