The main character is a man who runs a company that specializes in creating bioware for humans. There are other companies that do the same thing, and they are all obsessive about their rankings. One of the things I remember is an update for a program that allows you to see better in the dark. There is a female second in command of the company, who has a bed of daisies in her living room. They all commute to work by stepping on a tile which gives them a full virtual reality experience.
The main character enjoys taking a subway type thing to watch the redwoods passing by.
Part of the book involves a flashback where the man who runs the company is at a camp of some kind where he uses a bear to "accidentally" have one of his rival's arm's eaten off. Another part of the flashbacks is where he deliberately drops a dresser onto himself that he can't lift so that someone else will be blamed for nearly killing him.

I'm pretty sure that's Infoquake by David Edelman.
