I devised this Contest for anyone here who would like to participate in the Contest. I'm on an amazingly unbelievable reading pace for 2013. I'm Going into Unchartered Waters and Boldly Going Where Beatles1964 Has Never Gone Before. That is to say read 100 or more books in a year. I know this is the year I shatter my previous record high of 62 books read which I set last year. I've already read 26 books and I didn't finish my 26th book in 2012 until 6/28. And I'm currently reading three different books at the same time right now. I didn't read my 27th book of '12 until 7/2 so you can understand my excitement of my reading pace for this year. Recently I've been wondering exactly how many books I'm gonna read in '13. My first guess is anywhere between 120-150 books.

Here's how the contest works:

1. Try to guestimate approximately how many books I'll read between now & midnight on December 31.

2. The person(s) closest to the final number of books I read will be awarded 50 points for their House.

3. If more than one House is tied with accurate guesses all the Houses will receive 50 points.

4. Each month I'll continue to update exactly how many books I've read.

5. Three (3) guesses per person per House.

6. Points to be awarded to the winning House(s) 1-2-14.

7. The object of the contest is to try to be the closest one to the final number of books I read without going over the actual number.

I hope my Puffs will enter the Contest and try to win the points. Also since I created this Contest my guess of 120-150 books doesn't count. So even if I'm right I can't win any points for Puff. Good Luck to one & all. And have some fun.

I just thought of something. What if more than one person in a House accurately guesses how many books I read. Does this mean the House(s) will get 100 or more points??

To be truthful I don't know the answer to the question. Which is why I'm gonna defer to the Head Mistress and let her be the deciding Judge to this question. That is of course Head Mistress if you don't mind being the voice that answers the question. Or possibly the Assistant Head Mistress as the case may be. I think the fair thing to do would be allow the House(s) more than 50 points if more than 1 person guesses correctly the number of books I'll read this year. But like I say the final decision should be left up to either the Head Mistress or the Assistant Mistress if the Head Mistress isn't around at the time.

I don't like the fact that I'm seeing a downward trend in the number of books I've been reading every month since February. Even though I'm so far ahead of my '12 reading pace right now. Right now I think it's a little bit premature for me to start even thinking about the possibility that I might even be able to read 200 or more books in '13. I think I'll wait and see where I'm at by the end of June and then figure out exactly how many books I'll need to read in the last six months of the year in order for me to read at least 200 or more books for the year. I hope this downward trend is only temporary and we'll start to see an upward trend soon. I plan to try to read as many books as I possibly can every month between now and on midnight December 31. Who knows I might even suprise myself with the number of books I wind up reading in a month.

I was only able to finish reading two books for the
whole month of October. This is the first time this year that I failed to read at least six books in a month. I was readinfg several books while I was on Furlough through
October 16 unfortunately I didn't finish any of them. This will make it much more difficult for me to reach my Goal of 100 Books read for the year. The 75 Books Read Challenge is within my sights right now. I think I might wind up reading less than 90 books for the entire year.

It looks like the 4th time will finally be the Charm for me. Since I've been joining LTs 100 Book Challenge every year since 2010. I'm gonna be able to scale my LT Mt. Everest. Would I ever have been able to read 100 or more books in a year if I didn't join LT?? Good question. I don't know. I think it was more likely for me to eventually read 50 books in a year even if I had never joined LT. Would I have read 62 books last year probably not. What I'm trying to say here is that I think that by being a member of LT and joining all these yearly Book Reading Challenges has really helped me push myself to set a Goal to read more books every year. I'll have to wait until the end of the year see exactly how many books I read in 2013. Who knows maybe next year I'll challenge myself for the first time to join the 200 Book or 250 Book Challenges.

Although my guesses don't officially count in this Contest I'm doing it for the fun of it & also to see how close they are to the actual number of books I'll wind up reading this year. I hope people will start signing up to enter my Contest.

2nd Guess:151-190

Just saw this, and will hazard a guess:

122

The fact that you're "on fire" right now does not mean that you won't "crash and burn" later.

Here's hoping I'm wrong, that you'll read more than 122 in 2013.

:)

Thanks fuzzi. Yea, I know that's always a possibility of course but I'm so far ahead of both my 2010 reading pace when I read 52 books & 2012 when I read 62 books which currently is my All-Time Personal Record for most books read in a year. I think I'd have to stop reading books altogether in order for me to miss the Goal of reading at least 100 books. I just have a feeling that this is gonna be my year to set the bar so high for the number of books I read. I know the 62 books read last year will be a very distant second place.

Count me in for 144, a gross of books. :)

How are we assigned to houses?

You know as in the Harry Potter books & films. You're either put in Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw or Slytherin. You had to be sorted into one of those four Houses by the Sorting Hat. in the *New* Hogwarts Castle Sorting Hat. You're asked five questions and then the Head Mistress or sometimes the Assitant Head Mistress would sort you into the appropriate House for you depending on how you answered the five questions.

Don insists our household is Hufflepuff, but the kids are dead keen on Griffyndor, and I'm insisting on Ravenclaw. Not a single Slytherin wannabe in our house. :) Funny how worked up we can get about it.

Since I have already equaled the total number of books I read in January there is a real good possibility I'll read between 10-12 books in April, maybe even more.

OK! I'll play! I'm gonna go conservative and say 104. You're definitely on a streak right now; but I suspect *something* will happen that will slow you a up a little bit!

Tanya-dogearedcopy what makes you "suspect that something will slow me up a little bit!" I'm looking forward to reading over 100 books for the year. You know I've been averaging 6 or more books read a month for the first half of the year. I kinda expect to see that streak continue into the second half of the year too. As of today I've read 48 books so far. I only need anoth 56 books to reach your total of 104 books read. Who knows, you might be right especially since I've never even read anywhere near 100 books in an entire year before. And that's why I said earlier, "I'm Going into Unchartered Waters and Boldly Going Where Beatles1964 Has Never Gone Before". Your conservative guess of 104 books might be closer to the mark than someone else's higher guess of 122 or 144 books for the year. I only have to read another 52 books in order to meet the 100 Book Challenge.

I would totally love it if you totally blew my guess out of the water! And with your current pace, you probably will; but I always temper my bets with a little bit of the unexpected in life: Maybe it will be a life event, maybe just a reading slump, maybe a budget cut that affects your library system, maybe the pace just flags a bit owing to some denser material one month... I set my own goals on the conservative side as well, and then if/when I surpass them, it's a nice surprise :-)

Tanya-dogearedcopy it looks like your prediction that my reading pace would slow down is correct. So far I've only read one book for this month. It looks like August is gonna be the first month that I fail to read a minimum of 6 books. Of course I still have another 15 days left in this month to finish reading 5 more books. Right now I'm in the precoess of reading 4 books. Originally I had hoped to be further along than 56 books by right now. It looks like I won't break my record of 62 books read in a year until sometime in September. And I don't want to panic yet but my goal of reading 100 books may be starting to slip away from me. I know now that there's bo way I can read 130 or more books for this year. Right now I'll settle just to reach the 100 book milestone then anything over that will be an added bonus for me. I still need to finish another 19 books just to reach the 75 books milestone.

Hopefully my pace will pick up once again for the rest of August and into September. Of course I'll be very disappointed if I come so close to reading 100 books but fail in the end. But looking at the bright side it will mean I would've broken my record of 62 books read in a year and give me something to shoot for in '14. Because even if I fail to read 100 books I still would've been closer to accomplishing it than I ever have in my life. And maybe '14 will be the year I finally reach the milestone of 100 books and even possibly somewhere around 150 books for the entire year.

I'm also in the middle of a reading slow-down! I don't consider it a slump as I am continuously reading, but my own pace is flagged a bit this summer. It actually took me a **week** to work my way through The Watchmen (by Alan Moore) which is a graphic novel! Granted, it is a work that you need to take your time with, with all it's narrative and art detail, but still...

Anyway, I bet you'll still make and break 100 books, even if it's just by a smidge. And who knows? You just might end up with an unexpected boon of reading time as well! :-)
