Fiction story with plot about girl living her ancestors memories

a girl finds a chest of her ancestors' belongings hidden away in her basement. these artifacts somehow allow her to experience the memories of her familys' past, one instance includes religious discrimination in either spain or italy which provides cause for her family to convert from judaism to catholocism.
