Fiction.
I believe it was written in the late 80's or early 90's.
Plot: Woman's son was kidnapped. She left him in the car at the post office. The story begins years later. Her daughter, Jill is leaving for college. Her husband has either asked for a divorce, or she suspects he is about to. She gets new tires on her car. Basically, starts making sure things are taken care of. She redecorates her bedroom. She starts remodeling the apartment over her garage. Enter the single father who becomes the tenant and helps her with the remodel. She then discovers, and I think her daughter already knew, that her husband has a secret wife and child. She also discovers that her next door neighbor kidnapped her son.
I think the cover has a house on the front. Also, a tree with a wrap around bench. I seem to remember the colors were very purple, blue and maybe mauve.
I have searched Nora Roberts, LaVyrle Spencer and Barbara Delinsky.
