I'm trying to find the title and author of a book I read in the 80's. maybe a young adult mystery, children move into an old estate and find a mystery that has to be solved using clues found in a poem about counting crows: "one for sorrow, two for joy, three for..., four for boys, five for silver, six gold, seven for a secret never to be told." One clue has to do with crows carved into an old wooden headboard. It was probably written in the 1970's or earlier. Thanks for any help.

Bug said, “Me too,” but he added, “Maybe I could train me a crow like Dracula—” and Shelley could tell he didn't really have ... and chanted solemnly: One crow means sorrow, Two crows mean joy, Three crows a wedding, Four crows a boy.

A strange riddle is the only clue several young people have as they search for treasure in an old Gulf Coast mansion.
Only took a few seconds to find.

THE SECRET OF THE SEVEN CROWS
By Wylly Folk St. John
KIRKUS REVIEW
Shelly's father is allowed to rent the abandoned old house but the owner won't sell it for a school until his daughter Gale finds a treasure, left to her by one of those eccentric old ladies who seem to arrange their wills so as to provide diverting puzzles for their descendants' summer vacations. Because this is a 1973 mystery the poltergeists who harass the new tenants turn out to be kids paid by drug smugglers protecting their stash (shades of Woolley's Ginnie and the Mystery Light, KR, p. 813) -- but even after they are apprehended the old lady's clues stretch out the search, treasure hunt style, until at last Shelly helps track down the seven crows, Gale gets her treasure (is it really John Wilkes Booth's blood money?) and Daddy his school. The Lincoln-linked secret recalls another Woolley (Cathy Uncovers a Secret, KR, 1972) but of course St. John's kids -- with Gale's crow Dracula (a pet, familiar and clan totem in one) and brother Jason's gourmet cooking and maddening competence -- are far more fun to know than any number of Cathys and Ginnies.

Oh, good, I thought you had come back to check the post. Yes, you can find any posts you make on your Home page once signed in. You can edit how the home page looks, too, if you don't want so much on it. Great, glad that was it! Bookfinder.com searches multiple secondhand book sites, to find the cheapest copy (be aware of bookseller ratings and postage prices, and check individual sites).
Just as well it was that book as I wasn't having any luck finding any other books with subsequent searches!

Amazing! Martha_purple I just logged in searching for the same exact book from my childhood. Thankfully you remembered more detail than I did (I knew there was something significant about crows but didnt remember the poem), and thankfully bookel is a rock star and had the answer! Now I can order it for my kids. God bless the Internet!
