A man and his daughter lose a trunk while traveling (by wagon?). A crotchety hermit finds the trunk, filled with dresses which belonged to the man's deceased wife. (Perhaps the father left the trunk behind in town on purpose?)
Old maids and widows visit the hermit from time-to-time. He turns down their offers to fix up his place. One day he opens the trunk, finds the dresses, and turns them into curtains and other things, (saving one dress?). The girl and father later pass by and notice the fabrics (hanging to dry on line? in the window as curtains?).
I remember reading this once to my son three or four years ago. Wish I could remember which library I found it in--or the title!!!

Found it! OLD JAKE'S SKIRTS (1998) by Anne C. Scott, illustrated by David Slonim. Instead of dresses, I should've done the original search on lost and found, skirts...
