Older YA Ghost Story

I am looking for a book that I read in middle school as a young teenager about 12 years ago. I believe that the book was published before that time, maybe 70's or 80's and my memories are pretty vague.

The main character is a young woman and I believe that she is moving into a new home, possibly in a rather remote location. She is having problems getting along with her family and meets a ghost. He is a young man who I think came from a much earlier time, maybe 18th century? They often meet and talk and she begins to fall in love with him. I think her family is concerned by her retreat from the real world. She decides to kill herself in order to be with her ghost but he tells her not to or she decides that is a bad plan or something. He tells her that she will no longer see him because she needs to live in this world.

I think that is the plot but my memories are veeeeeeery hazy.

I think the cover may have had an old Victorian style house on the front.

I would love it if anyone could help me find this book. I remember loving it, I think I checked it out several times.

I know only one story about a modern-day girl falling in love with a 18th Century ghost, but it was a short story published circa 2001:

From Being Dead, "October Chill" -- Terminally ill teen falls in love with with the ghost of a Revolutionary War soldier much to the concern of her friends and family, who don't believe her. Bittersweet ending.

Hi, There is a book that I read in my teens that is driving me crazy now. All I remember is that it is a Mills & Boon, had blue coloured cover (maybe the 'presents' series?) and was released in 1990s. (Or 1997-1998 +/_ a year).

The story goes like this. The heroine comes for her sister/twin's wedding, only to find out that the bride is MIA. She is emotionally black mailed by her mother into taking her sister's place and ends up marrying the fiance. The Fiance is a rich, cold man who is not happy to marry the sister. He is not best pleased to find out that he has been tricked. He believes that both girls are the same type, up until the moment when he (forcefully?), beds his wife and finds out that she is a virgin (!!!).

I don't remember much else. But there is a scene where the newly wedded couple throws a party. The MIA sister returns and hijacks the party from the socially awkward heroine and acts like a hostess etc. Thus confusing all the guests. The hero is not very supportive and acts like he is disappointed in the heroine. I think the mother of the twins' is also involved in the sister's dastardly plan somehow.

I have searched for this book all over the net and does not know what else to do. Does anyone know which is this book? Or give me some idea how to find out? Thank you very much.

Wintereve, could you start a new topic thread specifically for your book search? Your query is currently buried behind Sagewind's 'Older YA Ghost Story' topic subject, and members whose search forte might be romance novels are not always likely to read into a thread with such a different topic subject.

Just go here:

http://www.librarything.com/groups/namethatbook

And follow the directions to post a brand new topic. You can paste your already-written query into the new topic, write a unique topic subject, and post away. Good luck!

To the OP, this sounds like Tryst by Elswyth Thane. It's a very old book and a wonderful spooky love story. I read it along time ago so I don't remember a lot of the details, but it's about a young woman who falls in love with a ghost. But I think the ghost from Tryst died in one of the World Wars rather than the 18th century so it may not be the same one.

I thought of Tryst, too. The overall description fits, except that the ghost was a secret agent, and his death actually occurs in the book. It was first published in 1939, and the story takes place in 1938.

>7 valeriechavez: Your enquiry is much more likely to get seen if you open a new thread following the posting guidelines here:

If you can provide any more details on when you read the book, when it may have been published, even details of what it looked like that can also help jog people's memories! Good luck.

>1 sagewind: Meg Cabot's Mediator series (first book Shadowland) springs to mind. The protagonist can see ghosts everywhere, but when she moves from NY to California to live with her mom and her new stepfamily, only to discover that her new bedroom is haunted by the ghost of a Spanish cowboy.

It was only published in 2000, though, so while you could have read it 12 years ago, it doesn't fit with your memory of it being an older book. But if you like the YA "falling in love with a ghost" type of story, it might be worth checking out the series even if it's not a match.

Look For Me By Moonlight - I think was the title, and the author Mary Downing Hahn.

I see this is an old post but your description really made me want to read this book and so I've been doing some digging.
Could it be: Another Time, Another Love by Vivian Schurfranz

Google Books Summary: Here is a super-long romantic winter story about a girl who falls in love with the ghost of a British soldier. This great read for cold winter nights features a ghostly twist on traditional teen romance tales, and a heroine who learns about accepting reality and finding lasting love--in her own world and time.

If you still use this site, please let me know if it fits!

I have since ordered and read Another Time, Another Love!

There are some details that match your description:
-The girl visits her Aunt and Uncle for the Holidays. Kind of like moving.
-She has issues with her mother's new boyfriend wanting to marry her Mom.
-The cover does make it look older, as if it is from the 80s, but it's actually from the 90s.
-She meets up with the ghost and they talk every day. Sometimes he transports her back in time.
-She eventually tells him goodbye. He has been asking her to stay. No explicit mention of her killing herself for him though.

Some other details that might jog the memory:
-It's definitely very wintery. I'm talking hot drinks, snow, ice skating.
-The MC is actually torn between 3 guys! Her boyfriend Mike at home, the ghost and a holiday romance named Bryan.
-The ghost is called Edward who was a British soldier killed in the Revolutionary War.

It's not as dramatic as you suggest however. Her family aren't worried about her retreating from the real world and there is no suicide talk.

I'm still curious if this is the one and hope you see my very late comment some day.
Funny enough the copy I ordered turned out to be an ex-library book, wouldn't that be funny.

If it is a different novel after all, I hope to read it some day!

A long shot and only a partial match, but I thought of Appointment with a Stranger by Jean Thesman.
