I read it around five years ago. It was set in Medieval Europe, I believe. The main character was a girl from a poor family, her mother embroidered(?) for a living. The girl somehow manages to become the lady-in-waiting for the princess (after delivering something her mom embroidered?) and I think her mother didn't really like the idea, but encouraged it to help support the family. The princess was snobby, but was nice at times. I think the two girls basically grew up together as the book progressed. There was an All Fools' Day scene that the main girl really enjoyed. I remember the girl brought food home from the castle a lot. The mother was a very proud woman, she and her daughter didn't have a good relationship. I think the father died when his kids were young. Either way, he was hardly mentioned. The girl had a brother who worked in the castle stables, they seemed to have a distant relationship too. In the end, there was an uprising (during which the brother dies I think...) of some sort and the princess wanted to take the girl with her when the royal family was escaping, but the girl didn't go. I believe that she just stared at the princess as the carriage went off into the distance. I think towards the end, the mother went blind, started losing her memory, or just died. Yeah, now that I think back to it, it was a dark book. I don't remember much about the cover, but I think the main girl's name started with an A? I'm sorry, I just listed random plot details, but I really hope someone will be able to help me out, the book had a profound meaning to it, almost like a coming of age story.

You say it's fantasy, but you don't mention any sort of fantasy elements in the description. What sort of magical/fantastic elements were there?

I remember getting it from the fantasy section of the library, but there wasn't any direct magic in it. I think there was something magical about the mother's embroidery, some subtle supernatural phenomena. Her embroidery definitely was significant in the plot though. Sorry, I only remember a few random plot details that stuck with me for some reason.

I know you said medieval, but this sounds a lot like The Lacemaker and the Princess, which is set during the French Revolution.

@rarm, that's exactly what I was looking for!! Oh wow, my memory really is terrible! So it was historical fiction and during the French Revolution... I was wayyyy off. I'm very sorry for the confusion! But thank you sooo much, you have no idea how grateful I am!
