So this was a science fiction book where people found to have psychic powers were exiled to an orange planet, it was very hot and many would get sick and die.
A man on earth was working like security/policing for the government, but then turned against the government because he realized he *was* psychic and they'd exile him if they found out.
He decided to go to the orange planet to help the exiles. He got help from a group of illegal trappers in an interplanetary fur-trade. He got to the orange planet and fell in love with a psychic woman named Laura who wore a purple jacket.
Then it turned out that Laura's little brother was the most powerful psychic of all, and he would heal the other exiles so they wouldn't die in the hot season. Then more government agents showed up because they got suspicious, and the little brother had to help people escape.
It turned out he was communicating with a group of aliens in another galaxy, who were dying out and wanted humans to come to their planet and continue their culture. So the boy opens up a bridge to that planet and all the exiles start going there.
A government agent shoots the boy, and the man in love with Laura shoots the government agent. The boy uses his psychic powers to shift his consciousness over into the agent's body so he (the boy) can live, and then he himself jumps over the bridge to the other planet, and Laura and the man follow.
