the story follows a dog who travels the countryside on his own. he is a dog hobo and even has a stick with a polka-dot bandana in which he carries his belongings.

one day he comes across a house and knocks on the door to ask for water or something.

there is no answer, but i think he hears a sound from inside, so he checks it out and finds a chronically sick aged pig laying in bed in a dark room.

the dog proceeds to take care of the pig. he cleans the house, opens the curtains, bathes the pig, washes his laundry, picks flowers, cooks him meals from the garden until the pig eventually dies...i dont know how long the dog lives with him...but by the end of it they are very close friends.

after the pig dies, the dog buries him beside the garden, locks the house up and puts the key under the flower pot i think and continues on his journey....

i cant remember the rest, but that story has stayed with me all these years, and i am looking for the book bc i want to gift it to one of my friends whose daughter is learning to read.

any ideas?

That's come up before though I haven't read it. The hobo dog with swag thing.
Dominic by William Steig
Steig, Dominic
One day hound Dominic sets out on the high road going nowhere in particular. He's just moving along, on his way to wherever he gets, to find whatever he finds. And that's plenty: a witch-alligator full of advice, the dreaded Doomsday Gang, and invalid pig who leaves Dominic his fortune, a goose somewhat curiously named Matilda Fox, an elephant who has forgotten, and a host of other engaging characters, all of whom involve Dominic in adventures.
